“How boring would it be if we were all the same?"

We’re used to funny lady Melissa McCarthy making us laugh, but she’s also got some pretty great advice up her sleeves. For example, her refreshingly simple tip for losing weight? Just stop worrying about it! So it’s no wonder she shares equally relatable and wise words with her own daughters.

McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, have two girls: Vivian, 12, and Georgette, 10. As any parent knows, those pre-teen years can be tricky for children and parents to navigate together. The actress recently opened up to PEOPLE magazine about how her family tackles all the hormonal hiccups and peer pressures that come when kiddos hit double-digits. “My oldest has a really good head on her shoulders, but kids that age are always thinking, ‘Does someone think I look silly?’”

Her advice? “I tell them it’s all silly and we’re all idiots!” That’s a hilarious reminder we can all use when we get too wrapped up in our thoughts and feel our confidence drop — even long after our teen years. “The second you embrace that and have real friends, you realize that’s the fun part,” McCarthy added. “Who is the dumbest and the goofiest? Those are the friends you’ll have all your life.” We couldn’t agree more!

The actress also made a point to emphasize how much our differences make us all better people. “How boring would it be if we were all the same? We’re drawn to each other because of all our weird, unexplainable character quirks.” Or as she summed it up, “Life is short. Just be yourself!”

McCarthy’s daughters are already following in their mom’s confident footsteps. “I love to see my two girls just truly say, ‘I know who I am and I know what I like and what I don’t like,” she said. “And they’re kind, so to have all of that come together is lovely.”

You can catch McCarthy doling out similar advice and beaming with the same level of pride with the impressive youngsters on Little Big Shots, which just premiered its new season on ABC.
