Today, Hewitt is 45, and has been married to actor Brian Hallisay since 2013. She joined the cast of the hit Fox first responder drama 9-1-1 in 2018, and it’s just the latest chapter of an illustrious career that started when she was just 10. 11. The Audrey Hepburn Story (2000) 

Hewitt starred in this 2000 made-for-TV movie biopic about the life of the beloved actress, humanitarian and trendsetter Audrey Hepburn. It was a challenging role for the actress, and she received negative reviews for her portrayal, but it was interesting to see her take a step outside of the teen star path.

America’s favorite orange cat hit the big screen in 2004, accompanied by Hewitt as the voice of Garfield’s veterinarian Dr. Liz Wilson and the love interest of his owner Jon Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer). Her character added a cute romantic subplot to the story, complementing the humorous antics of Garfield, voiced by Bill Murray. She reprised her role in the 2006 sequel.

Hewitt really showed off her acting chops in this Lifetime-movie-turned-series that ran for two seasons. The actress played Riley Parks, a Texas mom whose husband leaves her in the midst of a financial crisis. She then embarks on a career in prostitution to make ends meet for her family. The powerful show was based on a true story, and Hewitt was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the TV movie.

In this star-studded ’90s teen comedy, Hewitt played Amanda Beckett, the popular prom queen who has just been dumped by her jock boyfriend and ends up with a quirky outsider (Ethan Embry) who long admired her from afar. The role helped to solidify Hewitt as a gorgeous yet approachable teen queen.

5. Ghost Whisperer (2005-2010)

Hewitt starred as Melinda Gordon, a newlywed who can — you guessed it — talk to the dead in this supernatural series. Over the course of five seasons, we saw her character use her power for good, helping souls cross over to the other side. Hewitt’s performance was widely praised and Melinda became one of her most recognizable roles. She also served as a producer on the show, further contributing to its success.

4. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) 

This teen horror flick about four friends who are keeping a deadly secret was a major hit at the box office. Hewitt plays the main character, Julie James, in the movie and its sequel, and as the thrilling story unfolds, the audience is kept in suspense while the group of teens are stalked and taunted about the fateful night they killed a man in a hit and run accident — and then covered it up.

3. Heartbreakers (2001)

Heartbreakers is a delightful caper starring Hewitt and the always great Sigourney Weaver as a mother-daughter con artist team. Con artist stories have long been a cinematic staple, but they often featured men doing the conning. This breezy comedy offered a welcome woman-centered update on a classic plot, and Hewitt and Weaver made a truly dynamic duo.

2. 9-1-1 (2018-Present)

In her current serious TV role, Hewitt flexes her drama muscles as 911 dispatcher Maddie Buckley. The show explores the intense high-pressure situations that first responders are regularly thrown into, and Hewitt keeps us hooked with her mixture of sweetness and determination.

Hewitt was catapulted to teen idol status by this surprise hit about five siblings who are forced to live on their own after their parents die in a car crash. Hewitt starred as Sarah Reeves, the love interest of the main character, Bailey Salinger (Scott Wolf, who she had previously worked with on Disney’s Kids Incorporated).

Hewitt’s character was so popular that she left the show in 1999 to star in the spinoff Time of Your Life, which was centered on her search for her birth father. The spinoff only ran until 2001, but Party of Five remains beloved by fans to this day, thanks in large part to Hewitt’s sensitive performance and her chemistry with the rest of the young and charismatic cast.
