Dolly Parton Keeps Her Real Hair Soft and Shiny With This Old School Beauty Trick

Tags:

Although she may never let us see it, Dolly Parton does have her own hair hiding under all those beautiful wigs — and she gave us the inside scoop on how she keeps her natural strands soft and shiny!

“I still do like a lot of those old timey things,” Parton tells us. “Sometimes I wash my hair in rain water, which makes it soft. I don’t think people do that kind of stuff anymore, but we still do it. My older sister, Willadeene, and I still do the things we used to do when we were growing up!”

Parton didn’t go into details about how she gathers fresh rain water, but we’d imagine there’s a bucket sitting outside her Nashville home on gloomy days. She’s also not the only fan of this old school beauty hack. Commenters on the blog Voice of Hair rave about it being passed down in their family for generations and that it even helps their hair grow faster.

We couldn’t find any scientific evidence to back up rain water’s effectiveness for our strands, but it may be due to the fact that it’s a “soft water” and contains less additives than we get from our taps.

Parton offered another simple hair tip for those days when the skies are clear. “My aunts used to say put a cup of vinegar in like a gallon of water and rinse your hair,” she explains. “A little bit of red vinegar makes it shine.” It might not be free like rain water, but you can find huge, budget-friendly bottles of red wine vinegar at the grocery store to give this a try (Buy at Walmart, $6.98).

The country queen previously revealed what she looks like without her iconic wigs: “I still like to have that flashy hair. When I’m around home, I wear my little scrunchies, but I always put on some makeup and fix my own hair as cute as I can fix it.” We’re sure Parton looks gorgeous with her natural hair, especially after learning the simple ways she gives it a boost.
