Stop Lipstick From Smudging Under Your Mask With This Two-Second Trick

Tags:

The pandemic has brought about so many changes to how we live, like wearing masks on a regular basis. When it comes to our makeup routines, many of us aren’t wearing lipstick anymore because it runs the risk of smudging and getting all over our face coverings. But with spring coming and things on the up and up, it may be time to show off a little lip color once again. Luckily, with a simple trick, you can still wear your mask and not worry about messy lipstick when you take it off for a little outdoor dining.

The tip comes from makeup artist Carl Ray, whose most famous client is none other than former First Lady Michelle Obama. Even better, this hack really couldn’t be easier. While Ray lays out all of the steps for in-depth lip care, if you’re in a pinch, you can just apply your lip color directly (preferably on moisturized lips!) and take his tissue advice. It saves time and gets you out the door quickly.

If you have a little more time, start off by using a lip scrub to exfoliate your lips (Buy on Amazon, $8.94) and then moisturizing them (Buy on Amazon, $6.24) to lock in lip color and stop feathering, which is when your lipstick or gloss concentrates in the creases of your mouth. You can also make your own scrub with just coconut oil and sugar if you want to keep things simple.

After that, Ray recommends applying either a lip primer (Buy on Amazon, $3.91) or a cream concealer. By creating a neutral base for your mouth, whatever color you choose will truly pop. Think it’s finally time to add your lipstick? Ray says to hold your horses and apply lip liner all over your lips first (not just the outline), which gives more dimension and shape to lips in addition to a brighter hue around your entire mouth. Finally, apply your lipstick and then blot off any excess product.

So you’ve done your full lip routine. Now what? Ray says it’s time for his little hack: Place a one-ply tissue over your mouth and then brush a very light amount of translucent powder over the tissue onto your lips. Similar to when you use powder during your foundation routine, powder on the lips helps keep everything in place. Your lipstick won’t smudge, and it also won’t get all over your mask in the process.

And once you’re done for the day and have finally taken off that smudge-free mask, don’t forget to remove your makeup and moisturize your lips!
