The Simple Trick Jackie Kennedy Relied on for Full, Flawless Hair

Tags:

Jackie Kennedy Onassis was one of those timeless beauties who will forever be remembered as a style icon. When it came to her gorgeous brunette locks, she apparently relied on a simple trick for keeping the strands strong and perfectly coiffed — even while she slept!

Peter Lamas, who was her makeup artist after she left the White House, told Refinery29, “She would use a silk scarf to sleep and a silk pillowcase.” It might seem a little redundant, but there’s no denying doubling up on the silky fabric for headgear and bed linen paid off for Jackie.

For those who are reluctant to say goodbye to cotton or flannel pillowcases, Lamas warns that those could “rough up” your hair. They may feel soft, but the fibers can still snag strands can cause breakage — which may also lead to thinning.

Of course, we don’t all have Jackie O’s budget when it comes to beauty products. That said, you can still find some modestly priced options, like a super cute 100 percent silk bandana by Madewell (Buy at Nordstrom, $25).

You can also cheat a little with satin polyester scarves that usually run for less than $10 a pop. Just be sure to read reviews to check if the texture is as smooth as advertised, like the highly rated Corciova Square Head Wrapping Scarves (Buy on Amazon, $8.95) or YOUR SMILE Silk Like Scarf (Buy on Amazon, $8.91)

As for your pillow, mulberry silk is considered the best quality to go for — but doesn’t have to cost a lot, either. The Ravmix Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase (Buy on Amazon, $23.99) is a popular choice, or you can take a look at our recommendations for best satin pillowcases! There are plenty to choose from that won’t break the bank. Bonus: Your skin will thank you for snoozing on these sheets, too. Unlike other fabrics, silk won’t sap away the moisture from your skin as you sleep, which can help ward off annoying fine lines and wrinkles.

And if you want to round out your Jackie-inspired beauty routine, take a look at the black soap she swore by for flawless skin. We might not ever be a First Lady, but we can treat our skin and hair like one!
