Ever since I was a little girl, frizz has dominated my life. Being someone with thick, curly hair, I’ve come to understand that my mane’s unruliness is just a part of life — and something I’ll always be trying my hardest to tame. Naturally, when I heard about the launch of a custom hair serum ($19, Function of Beauty) that would not only boost my shine and smooth frizz and flyaways, but address up to five of my personal hair concerns, I was intrigued.
I’ve tried practically every anti-frizz product on the market, from sprays and shampoos to wraps and even some questionable DIY solutions, with little to no success, but the personalized angle of Function of Beauty‘s serum — which just so happens to be the concept at the heart of the company — struck me as a potentially unique solution.
Founded in 2015, Function of Beauty launched with a customizable shampoo and conditioner line to roaring success. The company has since expanded, but its m.o. remains the same. Prior to purchase, each customer takes an innovative, algorithm-driven hair quiz. Upon completion, the product’s ingredients are formulated based on your responses, which account for your hair type, goals, and preferences. You can even choose the fragrance (peach, pear, flower, pineapple, eucalyptus, or unscented) and color!
While curating my personal hair serum, for instance, I was able to formulate a blend specifically targeting my hair concerns of curl definition and oily hair with goals to deep condition, protect, and, of course, fight frizz. Some of the ingredients highlighted for me included shea butter, avocado oil, grape seed oil, and linseed extract, along with the base that’s found in each formulation of argan oil, jojoba oil, annato oil, and sunflower oil.
Roughly a week after I completed my quiz, I received my serum and put it to the test. To apply it, I followed the brand’s directions, warming a small amount in my hands (I opted for two pumps because of my hair type).
I proceeded to run it through my damp hair without any other additional products. As someone with oily roots, I also followed the brand’s recommendations to concentrate the product on the mid-shaft of my hair down to my ends (which are Sahara-dry), avoiding my roots altogether. I then brushed it through my locks. While I could already feel it getting to work, the real test came with the blowout.
Once I felt the serum had had enough time to absorb, I picked up my trusty Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush and got to work. As I began drying my hair, the first thing I noticed was how soft it was. Despite the fact that my strands were going through a dry spell, they felt hydrated and smooth to the touch.
And the perks didn’t stop there: Upon completion, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my hair was shiny and — get this — practically frizz-free. Was my hair 100 perfect perfect in the frizz department? No. Was it the closest I’ve come in a very long time? Yes. Not to mention the fact that it looked and felt the healthiest it had in months!
I’ve now used the serum several more times, and with each blowout, I’m astonished at the minimal amount of frizz that appears — even on ugly, rainy days.
Who knew the secret to eliminating frizz from my life came in the form of a customizable serum that sells for less than $20? Now, onto Function of Beauty’s new hair mask…
