A kitchen cabinet makeover is a project that a lot of homeowners think and talk about doing. But oftentimes, it takes some time to put this talk into action. We totally get it. On a list of many priorities in the home, a kitchen cabinet makeover can understandably fall to the wayside. But if your kitchen cabinets could use a little TLC, it never hurts to be inspired by another homeowner’s success.

Reddit user ‘mr_administrator’ and his wife are a prime example. The couple bought a house years ago that came with set kitchen cabinets. As the Reddit user puts it, his wife “always hated the color” of the cabinets. But he hadn’t had the chance to make a change—until he picked up his tools and got to work. Rather than paying a fortune to remodel the kitchen, they transformed the space themselves. And they loved the way the final product turned out. The most incredible part? They paid less than $150 altogether to get themselves a kitchen that looked like new.

We'll admit that we take the wife's side here—these kitchen cabinets were not all that much to look at in the beginning. Thankfully, a full kitchen makeover was on its way.

His wife still wanted a wood texture to the cabinets, but she didn't want to be able to see the wood grain like before. Nutmeg gel stain to the rescue!

The first steps were to sand the clear coat off of the cabinets and then apply the first layer of gel stain, using a 3-inch sponge brush while wearing gloves.

By the second coat, the cabinets were already looking significantly darker—just like how his wife wanted. The wood grain is slowly but surely disappearing!

Since the cabinets weren't the most expensive, he had to brush the stain on with the grain for the framing of the cabinets. After all, it was more like a particle board than actual wood.

The completed top cabinets already showed such a stark contrast to the bottom cabinets—in the best way! No wonder they were excited to move forward on the next step.

Then, it was time to complete the bottom half. Luckily, doing the drawers wasn't too hard, as he decided to keep them in and just pull them out and stain them right there.
