Frank Sinatra and George Strait’s Virtual Duet Just May Be the Most Beautiful Song You’ll Ever Hear

George Strait is highly respected within the country music community, so it may be surprising to learn that he performed with Frank Sinatra, who is known for his big band, pop sound.

Before the nation mourned the death of “Ol’ Blue Eyes” in 1998, Sinatra recorded and released an album called Duets in 1993. The album consisted of, not surprisingly, duets between Sinatra and other singers from different genres. Sinatra and his partner would record their parts separately, and a sound engineer would edit the clips together so it sounded like the two were in the same room.

Due to the popularity of Duets, Sinatra delivered a second version, Duets II, the following year. Again he featured artists from across the spectrum of musical genres, including Willie Nelson, Lorrie Morgan, and Jimmy Buffett— and that’s where George Strait enters the picture.

He recorded a version of “Fly Me to the Moon” with Sinatra, which ultimately didn’t make the cut for the album’s release in 1994. Apparently, Sinatra never told him about the change. It doesn’t look like that little snub ever harmed Strait, though, as he went on to release five more studio albums before the decade ended, including a 1995 4-disc boxset called Strait Out of the Box, which featured this “Fly Me to the Moon” duet.

In 2012, Strait announced his retirement from touring. His final tour, called The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, sold out within hours. Since then he has released two more albums.

On April 22, he opened his Las Vegas show ‘Strait to Vegas’ with a tribute to country legend Merle Haggard who died April 6 this year. His Vegas show was originally scheduled to run only through early December, but Strait has added show dates in 2017.
