Meet the Plant-Based Milk That Boosts Gut Health and Fights Menopause Symptoms
Flaxseeds are considered one of nature's most potent superfoods.
These days, there are so many alternatives to traditional cow’s milk on the market. Whether you enjoy the rich creaminess of oat milk or prefer nutrient-dense options like almond milk, there seems to be a type out there for everyone. The latest one on our radar, flax milk, is not only delicious, but also really good for you.
Flax milk, which is derived from flaxseeds, is yet another plant-based milk alternative. To make it, manufacturers start with whole flaxseed and grind it into a fine powder before blending with purified water to create a delicious, nutritious beverage. Flax milk tastes very similar to almond milk, and is dairy-free, vegan, keto-friendly, and gluten-free. And because flax is considered a seed, it’s also considered a safe option for those avoiding nuts.
We spoke to Brittany Fuisz, CEO and Founder of Malibu Mylk, to find out more about how flax milk can benefit your health. According to her, the nutrients in flaxseeds are what make this beverage a top tier choice. “Flaxseeds are an ancient superfood and have a wide array of health benefits including weight loss, improved cholesterol, heart health, improved blood sugar, and more,” she says.
It’s true: Flaxseeds are often touted as one of nature’s most potent superfoods — especially for the aging woman. These tiny seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch, containing high amounts of essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and cancer-fighting lignans. Furthermore, research suggests that since compounds in flaxseeds mimic the effects of estrogen in the body, incorporating them into your diet can help mitigate symptoms of menopause, like hot flashes and night sweats.
Because it’s made from whole ground flaxseeds, flax milk retains this impressive nutrient profile. What really makes it stand out against other plant-based milk alternatives, though, is its fiber content. “For Malibu Mylk, we use the whole ground flaxseed and don’t strain anything out, unlike most other plant milks, like almond milk, where all the almonds are strained out,” Fuisz says. Typically, straining removes the prebiotic fiber out of milks made from almonds or oats. Products like Malibu Mylk’s flax milk, however, provide up to three grams of fiber per serving. That means flax milk is good for your gut!
As mentioned, flax milk is similar to almond milk with a creamy texture and slightly nutty taste. Many brands offer different flavors, some sweetened and some unsweetened, and they can be used for baking, in smoothie recipes, in cereal, or drank purely on their own. I personally tested out flax milk made by Malibu Mylk, and of all their flavor profiles, I have to say that the original was my favorite to drink on it’s own. That being said, I will probably opt for the unsweetened vanilla and oat blend when I’m making my morning smoothie. You can find a ton of recipe inspiration on the Malibu Mylk blog and Instagram account!
So if you’re looking for another plant-based alternative that boasts some serious health benefits with a delicious creamy flavor, try pouring up a glass of flax milk. We think you’ll absolutely love it!
