Clothing pieces designed to cinch the midsection have been around for centuries. You’ve likely seen everything from rigid corsets with boning to fashion corsets with minimal structure. But recently, influencers on platforms like TikTok have been sharing their experiences with garments known as waist trainers. Some have even posted before-and-after photos suggesting that waist trainers helped flatten their stomachs and shrink their waists. But does waist training work? We spoke to experts to find out.

What is a waist trainer?

While traditional corsets are usually made with boning and laces to create a dramatic hourglass figure, and shapewear is generally much lighter and designed to gently compress the body without significantly altering its shape, waist trainers function a bit differently, explains Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, Chief Medical Advisor for Garage Gym Reviews.

“A waist trainer is a thick, elastic garment (often made of latex) worn tightly around the midsection to create a slimmer waistline, sometimes claiming to help with weight loss,” says Dr. Dasgupta.

Another key difference between waist trainers and shapewear or corsets is what they claim to do, explains Elias Ortiz, MD, Chief Bariatric Surgeon at Elias Ortiz & Company.

“The main difference is that waist trainers claim to reshape your waist even after you take them off (though that’s not usually the case), while shapewear and corsets simply provide temporary shaping and support during wear,” Dr. Ortiz says.

Does waist training work?

The idea of strapping on a waist trainer and seeing your stomach shrink sounds appealing, but it’s not quite that simple. When it comes to reducing belly fat for a slimmer waist, the garments you wear aren’t going to make a lasting impact.

“Waist trainers can temporarily change the appearance of your waist while you’re wearing them, but they don’t burn fat or permanently alter body shape. Any ‘slimming’ effect is due to compression, not actual fat loss. Once the garment comes off, your natural body shape remains the same,” says Dr. Dasgupta.

What can waist trainers do?

Even if the slimming effect or hourglass shape you get from a waist trainer doesn’t last, some people may still notice other short-term benefits. “Waist trainers might temporarily improve posture or create a smoother look under clothes,” says Dr. Dasgupta.

Dr. Ortiz agrees that waist trainers could be helpful for temporary posture support, but says it’s important to be mindful of your use. “While it might give you some extra support in the moment, relying on it too much can actually weaken your core muscles over time,” Dr. Ortiz explains.

If you already use a waist trainer, there’s no need to throw it away. But keeping your expectations realistic is key. “Just understand that it’s cosmetic, not permanent,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “Avoid daily, long-term wear, and don’t expect fat loss or major body changes. Focus on core workouts and overall fitness for safer, lasting results.”

How to use a waist trainer safely

If you already own a waist trainer or are considering trying one, you might be wondering whether they’re safe.

“Wearing a waist trainer occasionally for a few hours is generally safe for most healthy people, especially if it’s not too tight,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “Watch for signs like shortness of breath, numbness or pain. If any of those happen, it’s a sign to take it off immediately.”

That said, not everyone is a good candidate for waist training..

“Women with respiratory problems, heart conditions or digestive issues should be cautious, as waist trainers can restrict breathing and put pressure on internal organs,” says Dr. Ortiz. “They’re also not recommended for pregnant women, as they could interfere with the body’s natural changes during pregnancy. While I wouldn’t generally recommend waist trainers, if you do plan to use one, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss the risks in detail and see if it’s suitable for your specific health conditions.”

When you shouldn’t use a waist trainer

Although waist trainers are common among fitness influencers, exercising while wearing one could be harmful.

“Wearing a waist trainer during exercise can actually be risky,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “It restricts breathing, reduces core muscle engagement and may even cause overheating. There’s no real evidence that waist trainers make workouts more effective for fat loss. In fact, they could make exercising less safe.”

Does waist training work? The bottom line

While waist training can temporarily alter your figure, if you’re looking for long-term waist-slimming results, both Dr. Dasgupta and Dr. Ortiz recommend more sustainable lifestyle changes instead.

“If you really want lasting change, the best approach is to focus on creating a healthier lifestyle with better habits,” explains Dr. Ortiz. “While it may require some adjustments at first, eventually, you’ll see results and achieve your goals without having to rely on things that could harm you in the process. Healthy habits like balanced eating, exercise and proper rest are always the better way to go.”
