What Is Nice Cream? Get the Scoop on the Healthy Ice Cream Trend
“Nice cream.” Chances are, you might have heard a brief mention of this healthy dessert growing rapidly in popularity. But if you haven’t, you’ll definitely want to tune in. Low in calories, low in fat, and totally dairy free and gluten free, nice cream is a sweet treat that’s truly hard to beat.
Unless you happen to dislike bananas, that is, because that’s the main ingredient of this healthy ice cream.
What is nice cream?
Short for ‘nana ice cream, nice cream is essentially made from overripe bananas that have been peeled, chopped up and popped into the freezer, before being blended very well in a food processor or large blender.
The blending may take a few minutes, but you’ll be surprised by the smooth, creamy, custard-like texture that nice cream takes on once it’s been ground up. Pro-tip: the browner the bananas, the sweeter your nice cream will be. Consider how brown your bananas are that you use for baking!
https://www.instagram.com/p/BRDyMUxF0K6/You can use 2-3 bananas per serving, depending on how much of the healthy ice cream you want. For the most basic nice cream recipe, that’s really all you need. And after blending, you can either serve immediately as a soft serve style, or you can move the nice cream to a container and pop it in the freezer for a half hour for a thicker texture, before scooping it out with an ice cream scoop.
But a lot of creative foodies out there want to add a little more pizazz to their nice cream. And hey, why not?
Some people choose to blend their ‘nana’s with other ingredients to create new, exciting flavors. Others top their nice cream with an assortment of colorful fruits, nuts, sauces, or countless other garnishes.
The healthy food blogger behind Chocolate Covered Katie, for instance, shared her “extra dark chocolate brownie nice cream”—a genius concoction of cocoa powder, bananas, nut butter, and broken up pieces of chocolate. See her full recipe here.

Once you get more comfortable with blending and serving the nice cream to your liking, there’s really no limit to ingredients you can add.
Take one nice cream lover who added beetroot of all things.
Or this user, who added green tea.
