When you think of Brazil, vibrant images of Carnival might dance in your head—or maybe even images of Pelé dancing with a soccer ball. But Brazilian Mounjaro? Made with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and ginger, the country’s latest cultural export is a DIY drink going viral on TikTok for its purported ability to help you shed unwanted pounds. No wonder variations of the Brazilian Mounjaro recipe are popping up all over the internet. We asked a top dietician to weigh in on the “it drink” of the moment and whether or not it really works, plus offer a few metabolism-boosting tweaks.

What is Brazilian Mounjaro?

Taking its name from the weight-loss drug Mounjaro, this mocktail claims big things right out of the gate. While its moniker is a bit of an overstatement, the much buzzed-about Brazilian beverage does have slimming effects.

“It’s not going to give you results like GLP-1 medications, but it will fill your stomach with low-calorie liquid, which helps with portion control,” says dietician Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDCES, CPT, author of 2-Day Diabetes Diet: Diet Just 2 Days a Week and Dodge Type 2 Diabetes. Here, she breaks down the drink’s three key ingredients, explaining how they rev fat burning.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV)

“There is some research to suggest that apple cider vinegar can boost metabolism and help us feel more satisfied before and during meals,” she reveals. “It also helps balance blood sugar levels, leading to fewer cravings throughout the day. For someone just looking for a weight-loss edge, this could help.”

In fact, a study in Journal of Functional Foods shows that participants who consumed 2 Tbs. of ACV daily for 12 weeks lost a significant amount of weight compared to those who did not add the vinegar to their regimen.

Lemon juice

Though the small splash of lemon you’re going to put in this drink is not powerful enough to support your daily vitamin C needs, it is refreshing, says Palinkski-Wade. “The nice thing about lemon is that it makes beverages more satisfying, and that tart taste can sometimes help with appetite regulation.”

What’s more, a study in the European Journal of Nutrition found that drinking lemon-infused water spurs the stomach to empty 1.5 times faster, aiding digestion and so you don’t get bogged down with bloating or constipation.

Ginger

You may have heard it before, but it bears repeating: Ginger is an anti-inflammatory superstar. That’s important because “when you have chronic inflammation, your body releases more stress hormones that prod the body to store fat,” she explains. “Ginger also aids digestion and can reduce bloat—while that’s not the same as losing weight, it does help your pants fit better, which is what we all want!”

DIY Brazilian Mounjaro recipe

To reap the most calorie-burning benefits of Brazilian Mounjaro, try drinking it with food or right before a meal. Ready to make your own Brazilian Mounjaro recipe? Simply combine 1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1/2 tsp. grated ginger and honey to taste in a small glass. Fill the glass with warm water, stir and enjoy.

Boost the weight-loss benefits of your drink

A few simple variations can make this drink healthier and potentially even more slimming. Three Palinksi-Wade-approved tweaks:

Replace honey with stevia 

We all love honey. Trouble is, it’s very high in sugar. To get the same sweet fix without the calories, she suggests replacing this source of sugar with stevia. Or sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon in your Brazilian Mounjaro, another herb shown to hike metabolism and help balance blood sugar.

Add chia seeds

An excellent source of fiber and protein, chia seeds slow down digestion and support gut health, almost like GLP-1 medication would, she notes. “For a slightly thicker drink, soak 1 Tbs. of chia seeds in a bit of water for about 15 minutes, then stir the seeds into the beverage.”

Swap in green tea

Brimming with antioxidants and appetite-suppressing compounds called catechins, green tea is arguably the queen of all natural weight loss tonics. That’s why Palinski-Wade suggests replacing the water in this recipe for tea once in a while. After all, variety is the spice of (a calorie-burning) life.
