How to Protect Hair Color and Keep Your Locks Hydrated
It's all in the conditioner!
Give sun-parched, lackluster locks a beautifying boost with double-duty conditioners that infuse hair with much-needed moisture. Here’s how to protect hair color and restore it to its pre-summer vibrance.
Red hair?
A conditioner with bright red-orange pigments, like Marc Anthony Complete Color Care For Reds Conditioner ($8.99, CVS), contains fire tulip extract (which gives the leaves of the African tulip tree their color) that latches on to strands to restore hair’s fiery red tones.
Blond locks?
Lemon and chamomile extracts in John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening Conditioner ($8.49, Amazon) work together to naturally brighten and sharpen blond pigments without harsh bleaches or ammonia.
Gray tresses?
Cool-toned purple pigments in a deep conditioner like Pantene Pro-V Silver Expressions Brightening Conditioner ($14.99, Amazon) counteract any “dirty” yellow tinges, so silver hair looks dazzling, not dingy.
Brown or black strands?
A semi-permanent dye-infused conditioner like Overtone Daily Conditioner (available in Chocolate, Golden, Espresso and Rich Black, Overtone.co) deposits subtle color onto darker hair, adding depth while covering any errant grays.
