Shopping for Mother’s Day Gifts? Give Your Queen Bee This Meaningful, Historical Treat
Food gifts like a bottle of wine or a fancy cheese board are nice “experiential” Mother’s Day presents. She’ll remember you when she indulges in them. However, these gifts don’t last long, and unless your mom is an oenophile (what?) or a cheesemonger, they’re probably not something she’ll have a great deal of use for. Honey, on the other hand, lasts a long time, and it’s a bit of luxury that she can enjoy every day.
What’s more, the history behind this pantry staple makes it a meaningful gift (and might surprise you)!
Why is honey a meaningful gift?
In many cultures, honey has been an edible commodity for centuries.
This sweet ingredient has its own dedicated festival in Buddhist tradition called Madhu Purnima (meaning “honey full moon”). During the holiday, observers of Buddhism place honey and fruit at shrines or monasteries.
As legend tells it, these gifts symbolize the honeycomb Buddha received while he was in the Parilyeyok forest. The special honeycomb is said to have provided him with nourishment during a time of need.
In Greek mythology, honey is considered a “gift from above.” In the Plant Bee Foundation blog, writer Ayla Fudala explains: “The Muses — goddesses of art, poetry, and science — were often connected with bees, which were called ‘the birds of the Muses,’” she writes. “They gave mortals the gift of eloquence by sending bees to place honey on their lips, to make their voices sweet.”
Honey was also favored by Ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Archaeologists once discovered a well preserved 3,000-year-old jar of honey in the tomb of King Tut. It’s believed that honey was placed in the tomb to keep him happy as his soul and spirit journeyed into the afterlife (a sweet sendoff).
Given honey’s rich history as a sweet offering, it makes a wonderful Mother’s Day gift for the Queen Bee in your life.
