Whether you’re an early Christmas decorator (FYI, science says you’re happier if you are!) or a last-minute deck-the-hall-er, there’s no debating the importance of having a Christmas wreath in your home. After all, nothing marks the season quite like the oh-so-familiar sight of these dressed up pines — and their accompanying woodsy smell — as they greet visitors from one’s front door. A time-honored tradition which began centuries ago in Germany, Christmas wreaths have stood the test of time, and we’ve rounded up a gorgeous selection for you to pick up today.

Christmas Wreath History

Ace Collins, author of Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas ($9.71, Amazon) told TIME in 2018 that “the [Christmas] tree gave birth to the wreath.”

According to the writer, after trees began to be integrated into homes around the 16th century, wreaths were created from the limbs that were pruned prior to decoration in an effort to reduce waste. “Limbs were often cut off in an attempt to make the tree more uniform in shape or to fit into a room,” he wrote in his book via TIME

As he explained to the publication, “These people were living in a time when everything in their lives was used until it was gone … The wreath was born out of not throwing things away.”

Collins said the circular shape represented eternity, while the evergreen boughs symbolized power, resilience, and hope.
