How to Choose a Robe
When it comes to picking out the perfect robe, you’ll want to take several things into account, beginning with material. From cotton and cashmere to silk and velour, there are countless different fabrics a robe might be made of, all of which have their own special benefits. We’ve broken a few of the most popular types down for you below.
- Silk: Also known as “paat” in some cultures, silk is a natural fiber that comes from cocoons of mulberry silkworms through a process known as sericulture. It is extremely strong, but feels incredibly smooth and soft and has a shiny appearance.
- Cashmere: This super warm material is sourced from the fine undercoat of a cashmere goat. Though it’s technically a type of wool, it’s more fine, soft, and lightweight than average.
- Terry Cloth: This type of fabric has loops that can absorb large amounts of water, making it a good choice for those who plan to wear their robes after a bath or shower.
- Velour: This plush, knitted fabric has a texture that’s similar to velvet or velveteen. Velvet is made from pure silk, however, while velour is typically made of cotton or a synthetic fabric, like polyester.
- Cotton Waffle: Waffle, or honeycomb fabric, has a texture like a (you guessed it!) breakfast waffle. Like terry cloth, it has a high water absorbency plus good air flow that allows it to dry quickly, making it ideal for post-shower wear.
- Egyptian Cotton: Egyptian cotton is a highly absorbent cotton that is comprised of longer, silkier fibers than is typical and comes from the Nile River Valley in Egypt.
- Turkish Cotton: Turkish cotton is a premium cotton with extra-long fibers grown in the Aegean Region that actually gets softer and fluffier with washing.
- Microplush: With a soft, velvet-like feel, microplush is a knitted pile fabric made up of fine acrylic fibers. While it’s not great with water, since it won’t wick away moisture, it is quite warm and cozy, making it a good pick on a winter’s day.
In addition to selecting your material of choice, you’ll need to decide whether you want a classical robe (a design that has waist-tie belt, side pockets, and typically, a shawl collar) or a kimono (robes with flat collars and sometimes a belt).
Other things to note include the length of the robe (do you want one that covers your entire body, or a shorter one that hits at the knee?) and the way you’ll be using it, i.e. whether you’ll wear your robe after toweling off or to pair with your coziest slippers in an effort to keep warm on a cold winter’s day.
