There’s nothing better than a cup of tea to soothe you when life gets stressful. But sometimes you don’t want to bother turning on the stove and waiting for the water to get hot. An electric kettle is the easiest way to step up your beverage game, bringing water to a boil quickly.

Unlike a traditional kettle, which relies on heat from a stovetop to boil the water within, electric kettles utilize a resistor (a material that resists the flow of electricity) to turn up the heat. A built-in automatic thermostat controls the temperature of the water — an especially important element for brewing your tea or coffee just right.

How to Choose an Electric Kettle

When choosing an electric kettle, you’ll want to select a model that can heat to your desired temperature quickly and accurately. (Coming to a boil within five minutes is ideal.) You’ll also want to keep an eye out for several important safety features. Your kettle should stay cool to the touch, so you won’t burn your fingers or hands, and pour cleanly — no splashes or spills — to minimize the risk of being scalded.

The less plastic an electric kettle has, the better. Not only is this more environmentally friendly, these kettles will be more sturdy and last longer over time, without the potential for a “plastic-y” taste or smell to your drinks. You’ll also want something that’s quiet, with minimal rattling while heating or shrieking during boiling, and that’s easy to clean. Nice extras include a warranty in case something should happen to your appliance, automatic timers, temperature indicator, and automatic shut-off features.

There are all kinds of electric kettles out there, and we’ve rounded up one for every need. Keep scrolling to shop FIRST‘s picks for the best electric kettles!
