Red, White & Blue Brownie Flags Recipe Is the Sweet Way to Show Your Patriotic Spirit

This gooey fudge dessert gets decorative for the summer holidays

For chocolate lovers like myself, fewer desserts are better than rich, fudgy brownies (the crispy corners are the best part!). They’re the perfect treat for a bake sale, a barbecue or even a girls’ night at home. You can add ice cream, chocolate chips or frosting, and if you want that fresh-out-of-the-oven experience, pop it in the microwave for a bit. This chocolatey treat can also be festive, which is exactly what we did with our Brownie Flags Recipe.

To give this classic dessert a twist, we added powdered sugar, frosting and blueberries. This recipe is also homemade — it’s easier than you think — but you can always used a box mix if you’re in a pinch. Whichever method you choose, you can make your brownies into flags by dusting powder sugar on top, piping frosting stripes and decorating with blueberries in the corner. We recommend cutting the brownies first before decorating.

  • 12 Tbs. butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbs. confectioners’ sugar
  • 48 small blueberries, about 1/2 cup
  • 1 (4.25 oz.) tube red decorating icing


• Heat oven to 350°F. Line 9” square pan with enough foil to overhang sides by 2”; grease. In bowl, mix butter, sugar and cocoa. Stir in eggs and vanilla, then flour and 1/2 tsp. salt. Spread in pan. Bake until pick inserted in center comes out with moist crumbs, 28 min.; let cool 10 min. Transfer to rack. Let cool. Cut into 12 rectangles. 

• Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Arrange 4 berries in top left corner of each brownie. Pipe on red stripes.
