Impress Your Guests With a Chocolate Christmas Smash Cake — It’s Surprisingly Easy to Make

Add a bit of drama and excitement to a holiday meal with this fun Christmas smash cake! Whacking into the hard chocolate shell is sure to be a thrilling end to a delicious Christmas feast, as it’s packed with delicious Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

The best part is that it’s incredibly simple to make this impressive smash cake and with only a handful of ingredients. Technically, yes, a smash cake has no actual cake or baking involved — so please forgive us. In fact, the pudding-shaped appearance of the chocolate smash cake simply comes from coating the inside of an oiled bowl with melted dark chocolate and allowing it to set.

A bit of quick maneuvering is required to get the delicious Ferrero Rocher chocolates inside the smash cake. Fill the chocolate bowl with assorted sweets, and then place your serving plate upside down on top of the bowl. Holding them together, flip them over so the chocolate dome is now holding the chocolates in place on the serving plate.

Decorating the cake with icing is a breeze. If you don’t own a piping bag, you can put the icing into sandwich or freezer bag and snip off the corner. We used shimmering gold and silver pearl sprinkles and white icing to decorate the smash cake with pretty swirls, but you can decorate the outside however you like! The icing acts as a glue, so affix whatever edible decorations match your Christmas color scheme!

Once the royal icing has set and all your decorations are finished, it’s time for the big reveal! Gather your guests around and give the chocolate dome a good whack with a rolling pin, meat tenderizer, or other heavy utensil. Kids will love helping out with this stage!

The final step is to tuck in to the delicious chocolate shards and tumble of tempting chocolates!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 tsp. vegetable oil
  • 10 oz. dark chocolate melting wafers
  • 2 24-count Ferrero Rocher chocolate boxes
  • Gold and white pearl sprinkles
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
  • 4 drops lemon juice

Instructions

Brush the inside of a 8.5-inch diameter (12-cup capacity) dome-shaped stainless steel bowl or pudding basin with the oil; place in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Place chocolate melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, or until melted.

Pour the chocolate into the bowl and turn to coat the bowl evenly. Spread the chocolate to the top edge of the bowl with the back of a spoon to create an even layer. Place bowl in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, beat the egg white in a small bowl with an electric mixer until foamy; gradually beat in sifted powdered sugar. Stir in enough lemon juice to give a piping consistency.

Gently slide the chocolate shell out of the bowl. Fill shell with Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Place a serving plate or board on top and gently turn it over.

Spoon icing into a piping bag fitted with a small writing tube. Pipe icing in a decorative pattern on dome. Press on pearl sprinkles before icing sets. Crack with the back of a heavy spoon, meat tenderizer, or rolling pan to smash open.

This smash cake recipe can be easily made and decorated for other occasions, like our pinata smash cake for kids' birthdays! The only limit is your imagination!
