Blizzard Warnings in Effect as ‘Treacherous’ Travel Conditions Close Roads

Tags:

Hold onto your hats and scarves, because there’s a new winter storm on the rise. With blizzard conditions, heavy snowfall, and strong winds, Winter Storm Jaxon promises to pack a punch.

The latest winter storm — of many — has already brought more than a foot of snow to some parts of the West, and as it moves eastward, it shows no signs of slowing down. Blizzard warnings are now in effect for parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. According to forecasters, these conditions will create dangerous driving conditions in those areas.

It’s so brutal out there that some major highways have been forced to close huge sections off from drivers. For example, I-70 is closed from WaKeeney, Kansas, all the way to the exit for the Denver International Airport — which is about 270 miles total. Highways 40 and 83 were also shut down near Oakley, Kansas.

Even areas that aren’t under a blizzard warning could still see “treacherous” travel conditions from the snow and wind. Winter storm warnings and advisories are currently stretching from the Plains and the upper Midwest all the way to northern New England.

The wintry mess is expected to persist through Tuesday, with snow piling up as high as 18 inches in some northern regions like Maine. Interestingly enough, the areas that have so far seen less snowfall than average this winter are the ones expected to see some serious flurries this time around.

If you live in any of those areas, be sure to monitor your local weather forecasts and exercise caution whenever you step outside. And we’re sure you don’t need us to tell you and your loved ones twice — bundle up!
