This Perfume Keeps Away Mosquitoes Better Than Any Bug Spray

You may want to stock up on Victoria’s Secret Bombshell perfume–for next summer. No, not because it’s the company’s number-one selling fragrance. Or because fans LOVE its fruity, floral scent. The best reason to splurge on the perfume is because it keeps mosquitoes away. And that’s a claim backed by science!

Researchers at New Mexico State University tested 10 over-the-counter products for their ability to repel the two most common types of mosquitoes. Some of the insect repellents contained DEET, a powerful bug-killing ingredient. But DEET can sometimes cause skin irritations, so some people prefer sprays that don’t contain the chemical, like Avon’s Skin So Soft. Scientists tested these types of bug repellents, too.

The results: Products that contained DEET did best–and lasted longest. But Bombshell was just as effective, and beat out the non-DEET options. (The runner-up: Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent.) Even the researchers were surprised, citing the belief that floral scents ATTRACTED mosquitoes. They speculated that the perfume could mask the natural human odor that brings the insects running (or flying).

The only caveat, the study’s authors wrote, is that they used a lot of perfume and “lower concentrations of the same fragrance might have different effects.”
