Actors have various techniques for getting into character, whether it’s method acting or studying under someone before taking on a role. For Richard Gere, it was important to get into character for his new film Time Out of Mind by experiencing some of the daily hardships of New York City’s homeless population--and he learned way more than how to act the part.
The famous actor, who is worth millions of dollars, was shocked by the conditions in which these people live day in and day out. In fact, no one recognized Gere while he posed as a homeless man, and only one woman stopped to help him. Though most people would “look at him in disgrace,” according to a Facebook post from Gere, this woman stopped to offer him food while he was rooting through a trash can. He accepted the food and thanked her, never revealing who he was.
The encounter and experience deeply affected Gere. In a post on Facebook, Gere claimed that after the woman's kind gesture he walked around handing out money to every homeless person he saw and encouraged others to help someone in need if they could.
