The Key to Preventing Wrinkles May Be Hiding in Your Hair

Ready for some amazing news? A new scientific breakthrough may mean the end of wrinkles, one of the most telltale signs of aging. In fact, the key to potentially preventing and reversing wrinkles may have been right off the top of your head all along: in your hair follicles.

New research by the University of Pennsylvania, University of California–Irvine and other institutions in the U.S. and Europe has shown that the molecule Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) found in hair follicles could repair damaged or scarred skin by stimulating the production of fat cells, reports Australia Women’s Weekly.

Here’s why: Fat cells, or adipocytes, are normally found in the skin, but are lost when scars form as a direct result from aging. The gradual degeneration of these cells causes the skin to lose elasticity over time, resulting in fine lines and sagging.

“Essentially, we can manipulate wound healing so that it leads to skin regeneration rather than scarring,” said lead scientist Professor George Cotsarelis from the University of Pennsylvania.

Researchers hope that the findings can ultimately be used in the development of both anti-aging and scar-healing treatments.

How’s that for amazing news? While aging gracefully is certainly something to be proud of, we’re sure many women and men will jump at the chance to smooth a wrinkle or two here and there.
