Target Is Reportedly Closing 12 Stores in 8 Different States

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Target is closing 12 of its stores across eight different states.

Target began notifying store employees at the affected locations on Monday. The stores are scheduled to close on February 3.

“It’s not a decision we make lightly,” Kristy Welker, a Target spokeswoman said. “We have a really rigorous process in place in evaluating the performance of a store in deciding when to close or relocate a store. We close a store after seeing several years of decreasing profitability.”

Which Target stores are closing?

The following stores will close their doors on February 3.

1. Eastland in Harper Woods, Mich.

2. Hutchinson, Kans.

3. Benton Harbor, Michigan

4. Fergus Falls, Minnesota

5. Hastings, Minnesota

6. Macon, Georgia

7. Slidell, Louisiana

8. Lauderhill, Florida

9. Matteson, Illinois

10. Romeoville, Illinois

11. Baltimore West

12. San Antonio Far East

Target opens new location in Midtown Manhattan

Although Target plans on closing 12 of its stores in February, the company unveiled plans of opening 12 new locations back on October 19, the day the Herald Square location opened in midtown Manhattan. Target also announced plans to accelerate the number of store remodels to more than 1,000 by the end of 2020. According to a company press release, Target will be opening a total of 32 stores in 2017, with plans to open 35 new stores the following year.

“Target has made significant progress in our strategic priorities since announcing a meaningful investment in our business earlier this year. We’re elevating every aspect of how we serve our guests, including reimagining hundreds of stores, opening new small-format stores, introducing new and exclusive brands, pursuing an aggressive digital strategy and transforming the way we replenish our stores and get products to our guests,” Brian Cornell , the chairman and CEO of Target said in a statement.

“As we open more small-format stores in new neighborhoods across the country, we’ll be even closer to our guests, and our reimagined stores will provide elevated inspiration and ease, along with serving as hyperlocal distribution centers to fulfill digital orders faster.”
