Meghan Markle’s Dad to Undergo Heart Surgery, Won’t Attend Royal Wedding After All

We can’t keep up! On May 15, Meghan Markle‘s father, Thomas Markle Sr., announced that he changed his mind and hoped to attend his daughter’s upcoming royal wedding after previously stating that he would not make the May 19 nuptials after suffering a heart attack six days prior. However, on May 15, Thomas revealed that he could no longer travel to Windsor, England, for Meghan’s wedding because he need to undergo heart surgery.

“[Doctors] will go in and clear blockage, repair damage, and put a stent where it is needed,” Thomas told TMZ, adding that he is scheduled to have the operation early in the morning on May 16. On May 15, Thomas told TMZ that he hates “the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history” and hoped to escort his youngest daughter down the aisle. He also revealed that Meghan called him on May 14 following the reports of his ill-health. Though Thomas was not able to answer the call, he said Meghan texted him that she loved him and was concerned about his health.

And now, it’s been revealed that Meghan and Harry allegedly have “mixed emotions” during what’s supposed to be a really exciting time for them. “This is a serious situation. Meghan and Harry are very concerned,” a source told Entertainment Tonight on May 16. “Thomas’ health is a private matter and therefore no comments or statements will be made [by the Palace].” The insider added, “Meghan and Harry have mixed emotions right now, between their concern for Meghan’s dad and the exciting start of their life together.”

Earlier, TMZ also reported that Meghan, Prince Harry, and Kensington Palace were “blindsided” by Markle Sr.’s decision to bail on the wedding. The palace also officially responded to the drama with the following statement: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.”

The news of Thomas’ health issues comes in the wake of him also admitting that he staged a series of paparazzi photos in recent months showing himself reading a book about Britain and Google searching articles about his daughter. He told TMZ that he “meant no harm to Meghan or the royal family when he made a deal to allow a photo agency to take pics of him getting ready for the wedding and had a reason and it was not principally about money.”

Since Meghan announced her engagement to Harry in November 2017, the former actress’ reclusive father said he’s been “ambushed” by paparazzi and upset that they’ve photographed him in unflattering ways. He allegedly believed staging new paparazzi photos would be “no harm” and “would help recast his image.” He then reportedly told TMZ that he believes the staged pics look “stupid and hammy” and “deeply regrets” being paid for the photos.

Despite the drama, a source close to Meghan recently told People that Thomas and the royal-to-be’s relationship has recently been better than ever after years of ups and downs. “Meghan loves her dad. Like any father-daughter relationship, there have been ups and downs over the years. But they are in a good place now,” the insider shared. Scroll down to learn more about Meghan’s dad, Thomas!
