As summer fades away, you’ve probably started pulling out all your favorite fall sweaters to keep you nice and cozy once the weather cools down. Unfortunately, our most-loved (and worn) sweaters tend to also get covered in pesky pilling. You can always try using scissors to snip away at the small fuzzballs, but there’s the risk of slipping and slashing the fabric and ruining the whole top. There’s also gadgets that claim to pull or shave the pilling away, but those can also end up disappointing you when they barely make a dent.
Of course, we unearthed an answer to this clothing conundrum from none other than Martha Stewart. In a clip of her show from 2012, she recommended using a simple comb to get rid of all the pills from your wool, cashmere, and similar-fabric sweaters. The product she raved about (and gave out to all of her audience members) was the Collins D Fuzz It Fabric Comb.
It can be difficult to find the real deal these days, and the prices can vary ($17.87 for a three pack, Amazon). Luckily, there’s another highly-reviewed, easier to find, and cheaper option: Comfy Clothiers Multi-Fabric Sweater Comb ($6.95, Amazon). One glowing review wrote, “Works great for easily removing pilling off of sweaters. Can't live without this in the winter!” Others commented on how it works well with blankets and furniture, too.
Stewart offered more advice when using a tool like this: “Don’t dig in.” Use a gentle hand to glide it around any pilled up fabric and your items should look as good as new! You can take a look at the video below to see how Stewart used her de-pilling comb and learn more about washing wool and cashmere sweaters.
Now all you’ll need is a cup of hot cocoa to sip while you snuggle up with your favorite sweaters this fall!
