File this under least surprising study finding ever--at least if you're a mom (no matter how old your kids are). But first, let's just run down the many wonderful benefits of having children. They bring us joy (most of the time) and meaning. They make us laugh (and, yes, cry). There's a constant commotion when you've got a houseful of kids, although admittedly, it does drive us crazy at times. Life is never, ever dull.
But there's one area where kids wreak havoc in a mom's life--and it takes place in the bedroom. The American Academy of Neurology took a survey of nearly 6,000 people and found (wait for it!) that moms get less sleep than dads. While dads usually get seven (or more) hours of sleep a night, more than half the moms surveyed (52 percent) slept less than six hours. Surprised? No, we weren't either.
Here is something surprising--living with kids affected women's ability to get a full night's rest more than exercising, weight, employment, education, and snoring! And the more kids women had, the less likely they were able to snooze.
I guess experts finally admit what women have known all along. But doesn't the memory of watching your little ones sleep more than make up for the z's you lost?
