Thousands of Pounds of Pork Products Recalled Over Contamination Risk

USDA

If you bought pork recently, listen up: There's a new recall affecting smoked pork sausage products nationwide for a truly sickening reason. The products in question might be contaminated with foreign matter — specifically, pieces of plastic.

Johnsonville, LLC is recalling about 109,603 pounds of "Jalapeño Cheddar Smoked Sausage" after three consumers complained about finding hard, green plastic in the product, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Produced on January 4, 2018, these sausage products were shipped to retail locations nationwide and sold in 14-oz. plastic packages with a best-by date of April 4, 2018.

Fortunately, so far there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or injuries from customers after eating this product. But considering three people already found the gross plastic inside, it's better not to take any chances. If you have jalapeño cheddar smoked sausage in the fridge, but you're not sure if it's affected by the recall, check the Batch ID number for either 1001124486 or 1001124487. The items also include the establishment number "EST. 34224" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

If you did buy one of the affected products, the USDA is urging you not to consume it. Instead, you should either throw them out or return them to the place of purchase. If you have any other questions about the recall, you can call or text Johnsonville Consumer Relations at 1-888-556-2728.

But even if you didn't buy one of the recalled sausage packages, it's worth spreading the word to anyone you think might have bought them. After all, one of the last things any of us want is to find plastic in our food!
