Time doesn’t seem to exist for people like Jennifer Aniston. I mean, if you caught the 53-year-old actress on last year’s Friends reunion, you know that time has been good to her. But according to Aniston, it’s not all in the genes. There’s one supplement she credits for giving her that ageless glow: collagen powder.
It’s all about the collagen.
In a 2021 interview with Vogue, Aniston talked about her position as Chief Creative Officer of Vital Proteins. “I don’t want to be the face of something if it’s not a part of my daily routine. That’s really important to me,” she said, noting that since she started using collagen powder, she’s never looked back.
Apparently, collagen peptide supplements have been a part of her life for some time. She was first introduced to them by her functional medicine doctor eight years ago, and she saw results so quickly, she immediately made them a part of her daily routine. “My joints, my nails, my hair, my skin… everything just started to improve,” she said.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and it makes up our connective tissues, tendons, bones, ligaments, muscles, and organs like our skin. As we age, however, our stores of collagen and our ability to produce new collagen decreases. This leaves us with weaker joints and muscles as well as wrinkly, sagging skin. Adding collagen protein to one’s diet, as Aniston’s doctor explained, can help our tissues regenerate. Research shows that collagen supplements can improve skin appearance and elasticity, reducing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. And as it did for Aniston, it can even improve joint health and hair thickness.
Aniston starts her day with a collagen-infused coffee made with steamed almond milk, a little cinnamon, a little a stevia, coffee (of course), and a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Powder (Buy on Amazon, $15.00). Occasionally, she’ll add a collagen-infused Vital Proteins Protein Bar (Buy on Amazon, $36) after a morning workout.
Outside of her daily collagen, Aniston shared that prioritizing her mental health is vital to graceful aging. In that effort, she doesn’t check her phone during the first hour of the day, she meditates every morning, and she’s committed to keeping herself in the know with new developments in health and science.
Aniston also said that keeping a “pro-aging” mindset keeps her feeling young. “Yes, it’s great to be fit and look great. . . but it’s about your cells, your muscles, so we can grow old and thrive,” she emphasized. “What my mom used to say to me was, ‘This is about longevity. It’s a privilege to grow old, but we don’t have to grow sick.’ It’s just sort of been a theme in my life: to enjoy the age I am and not look at aging as a negative, but as the privilege that it is. We all age!”
Ain’t that the truth!
