24 Best Winter Coats for Women to Keep Cozy and Stylish in the Cold

With the trees dropping their leaves and the mercury plunging, it’s time once again to pull our warmest gear from the depths of our closets and prepare to brave the cold. Or maybe, rather than dusting off last year’s winter coat, you’d rather treat yourself to a brand new one before the snow flies? Nothing takes the sting out of winter’s chill like a little retail therapy! We’ve rounded up the best winter coats for women, so you can stay warm, dry, and fashionable all season long.

Psst — while you’re here, don’t forget to check out the best winter thermals to add an extra layer of warmth under your clothes, and the best winter blankets to snuggle underneath during those snowy night movie marathons! Looking for the best plus size women’s winter coats? We’ve got those, too!

What is the warmest winter coat?

If you live in a place where the weather gets downright frigid in the winter (we’re looking at you, Minnesota), you’ll want a coat that offers serious warmth, even in subzero temperatures. Down filling is the go-to choice for the warmest winter coats, but if you’re looking for a vegan winter coat, a wool coat, or a faux-fur coat, there are plenty of stylish options to keep you toasty as well.

When thinking about what kind of winter coat you want, there are many factors to consider. Do you want a puffer jacket that ends at your waist, a parka that covers your hips, or a full-length coat that falls at or below the knee? Would you prefer a coat with a hood, and if so, would you like that hood to be removable, or lined with fur, or both? Almost any winter coat you find will have pockets, but do you want them to zip closed so your gloves don’t get lost? Do you need extra pockets for phones and other gear?

No matter what you’re looking for, it’s out there — and hopefully we’ve taken some of the work out of looking for the perfect winter coat for you.

What are the best winter coat brands?

When you’re shopping for a winter coat, you’ll want to keep an eye out for brands like Patagonia, Columbia, Lands’ End, and North Face — all well-known for making warm, stylish, and sturdy cold weather apparel.

But don’t discount other, lesser-known brands, such as OROS, which makes high-tech outerwear using the same material NASA uses to insulate spacecrafts, or vegan-approved retailer Noize, which makes a full line of cruelty-free, sustainable coats and jackets for both men and women.

You’ll also find fabulous picks by smaller labels at Anthropologie and other boutique retailers. In fact, there are so many different brands making winter coats you’ll love, you may just have to get more than one!

How much does a winter coat cost?

A good winter coat can easily run you several hundred dollars — Canada Goose down coats are notoriously pricey (but worth it!). But if you’re on a budget, there are plenty of more affordable choices. Try looking at discount department stores like Kohl’s, and of course Walmart, that old standby for savings. Amazon also has a wide selection of winter coats, and many of them are in the under-$100 price range.

What are the best winter coats for women in 2021?

Women’s Ultralight 850 Down Coat

long down coat
L.L. Bean

Buy at L.L. Bean ($289)

Why we like it:

  • Available in regular, petite, and plus sizes
  • Comes in 4 colors
  • Machine wash and dry

Premium 850 down makes this full-length coat super warm while also being lightweight. It resists moisture better than regular down, and dries faster, keeping you dry and comfy no matter what winter brings. A durable nylon shell, insulated attached hood, elastic cuffs, and an interior pocket make this a long winter coat with everything you need!

“This is my favorite winter coat! It’s very lightweight, yet extremely warm! The long length hits the top of my boots so I’m well covered. We often walk across a long bridge, very windy and very cold up there with temps in the 20’s … I wore this coat with just a thin shirt underneath and was very comfortable. Highly recommended.”

SAYFUT Hooded Puffer Coat

BEST winter coat for women at walmart
walmart puffer coat

Buy at Walmart (From $61.99, originally $130.99)

Why we like it:

  • Vey affordable (under $100!)
  • Removable hood
  • Available in stylish camo print (pictured) or classic black

If you’re in the market for a winter coat under $100, Walmart has you covered with a number of great options, including this hooded puffer coat. It features hip-length insulation, elastic ribbed “storm cuffs” with thumb holes, removable fur lining on the big, fleece-lined hood (which is also removable), and both buttons and a zipper to keep the chill out. Note: It’s made of 100 percent polyester, hand-wash only, and many customers recommend sizing up!

“Based upon the suggestions, I ordered a size up. It is lightweight and keeps me warm in the wind. Also the length is great. The hood and collar are both removable which is nice. I love it!”

MICHAEL by Michael Kors Faux Fur Trim Coat

BEST faux fur winter coat
michael kors faux fur trimmed coat

Buy at Bloomingdale’s ($136.01, originally $595)

Why we like it:

  • On-trend camel color
  • Faux fur sleeves and collar
  • Faux fur collar is removable

Sometimes you need a winter coat with a little glamour, and this Michael Kors faux fur number fits the bill. With a camel wool body and faux fur sleeves and collar, it’s the best of both worlds: classic and luxurious. The notched lapel and snap closure make it a good choice for those times you’re not going much further than between the car and the restaurant door, as they won’t keep the bitter wind out — but you’ll still stay plenty warm, especially with the faux fur collar, which is removable if you prefer a sleeker look. Fully lined, with two welt pockets in the front, this stylish dry clean-only winter coat will be your go-to for more formal occasions.

Cole Haan Bib Down & Feather Fill Coat

best winter coats for women

Buy on Nordstrom ($150, originally $300)

Why we like it:

  • Insulated with down-and-feather fill
  • Water repellent finish
  • Machine washable

This hooded Cole Haan Coat is everything you want in a winter coat. It’s got hand-warming pockets, a water-repellent finish, a storm placket to keep the wind out, it’s filled with down and feather fill, and includes an extra standing collar to keep you toasty. It’s also easy to care for — just toss it in the washing machine when it needs a refresh — and will stand up to years of wear.

“If it gets too warm, I love the bib insert part that can keep you zipped up but lets air through. I can not say enough great things about this coat, I am so pleased of the quality and fit…it fits around the waist perfectly, not too loose or too tight yet gives enough room if you have layers inside.”

Orion Parka

Best Women’s Winter Coat for Extreme Cold
warmest coat for extreme cold orion parka
Oros Apparel

Buy on OROS ($375, originally $440)

Why we like it:

  • Uses NASA-engineered insulation to keep you warm
  • Innovative chest clip keeps jacket in place when you want to wear it open
  • Comes in 3 great colors

If you live in a very cold climate, plan to visit one, or just won’t tolerate ever being cold at all, the Orion Parka is what you want. Billed as “the warmest jacket on earth,” we can attest that it’s not just a marketing line — we tried it out and this coat is warm. It’s thinner than you might expect, so it’s not at all bulky, but it’s heavy, so you know it’s serious. We got the deep purple color, which has fun orange contrasting trim inside, but it’s also available in black, or a gray/green they call “malachite.” This coat is all about staying warm and is not fooling around! A little clip at the top keeps the coat on when you don’t want to zip it up, and it also has velcro closures in addition to the zipper. The outside pockets zip up, so your gloves, mask, phone, and other necessities won’t fall out, and there are two interior pockets as well, which we love because it means we can leave our bag at home when we go out for a walk.

“My wife loves her new purple Orion. It fits her perfectly, is flattering, and is clearly well-made in all respects. If you have concerns about whether you will like the jacket, their return policy is great and they will send you a return authorization without any questions. The parka has plenty of pockets both outside and inside, there are cuffs inside the sleeves for warmth and an interesting upper clip to hold the jacket semi-closed if you don’t want to close it entirely. The jacket has some weight to it because of the special inner material, but it looks sleek when on and is not at all bulky. Great jacket.”

Katahdin Primaloft Puffer Jacket

best winter coat for short ladies
best winter coats for women
L.L Bean

Buy on L.L. Bean ($119)

Why we like it:

  • Available in sizes XXS to XL, regular or petite
  • Comes in bright, cheerful green or blue, or in black
  • Machine wash and dry

A lightweight, casual puffer jacket that keeps the wind out and keeps you warm is a must-have for winter, and we love this one from L.L. Bean. With PrimaLoft insulation, an adjustable hood, zippered hand pockets, and a drawcord hem to keep drafts out, this is a perfect coat for hikes or walks around the block, running errands, or a day on the slopes. And if you’re on the shorter side, the length is just right and won’t swallow you up!

“This is a first rate coat. Not too bulky, attractive with every possible thought to useful features that I hoped for in a coat that I will wear all winter.”

Thermoball Eco Parka

Most Popular Women’s North Face Winter Coat
thermoball eco parka in gray
The North Face

Buy on The North Face ($230)

Why we like it:

  • Made from 100 percent recycled polyester
  • Available in 6 colors
  • Zippered hand pockets

It’s easy to see why people love this North Face parka: It comes in a great variety of colors, is available in sizes XS to XXL, and has a drawstring waistband so you can cinch it snugly around your middle, as well as a two-way zipper that unzips from the top or the bottom. An attached hood keeps the heat in (did you know you lose almost half your body heat through your head?) and zippered pockets keep your hands warm and your stuff secure. Concerned about the planet? This coat is made from 100 percent recycled polyester, so it’s environmentally-friendly!

“I LOVE this jacket! I’m always freezing, but this jacket keeps my hips warm in cold weather. I normally wear a medium but ordered the large so I can layer underneath. I can comfortably wear my largest fleece underneath this jacket. It does fit a little large without layers but you can tighten the waist band so still looks great. Also, I love that the zipper works from the top and bottom allowing you to loosen the bottom when sitting on the ground for extra comfort. I would recommend this jacket to everyone!”

Valuker Down Coat

Best Women’s winter coat with fur hood
coat with fur hood

Buy on Amazon (From $99.99)

Why we like it:

  • Very affordable (under $100)
  • Comes in 11 different solid colors plus 2 different shades of camouflage
  • Thousands of 5-star Amazon reviews

Do you love the look of a fur-trimmed hood? This down puffer parka will do the trick! The faux fur is plentiful, framing your face to make you look like the queen of cold weather — and it won’t shed, either. A two-way zipper closure opens from the top or the bottom, and elasticized cuffs keep the cold out. There are two deep outer pockets, plus an interior pocket, so you can stash your keys, phone, mask, and other must-haves, and the windproof, waterproof material will keep them safe and dry. Besides the affordable price tag, you’ll love that this coat comes in a wide array of colors.

“I have thoroughly tested this coat. It’s really warm, and not too heavy. It’s a nice fit — I’m normally a 6 to 8 and got a small. It seems to work as a coat when you’re going out with just a few layers on, but also fits over thicker layers without losing the fitted look. The fur trim pops on really easily … and doubles up as a good fur collar when you have the hood down. I would definitely recommend this coat.”

Orolay Thickened Down Jacket

Best winter coat on amazon
amazon coat

Buy on Amazon (From $149.99, originally $246.99)

Why we like it:

  • 4.5 stars on Amazon with nearly 12,000 reviews
  • Available in 13 colors and patterns
  • Lots of pockets

This coat is so popular, it’s known simply as “The Amazon Coat” — and we can see why people love it! If you’re a fan of pockets, you can’t do better than this coat: It’s got six huge ones, with zipper closures to keep them secure! It’s also got a fleece-lined hood, down filling to keep you warm (genuine duck feathers and down, vegans beware), and soft, ribbed knit cuffs. The most difficult thing about this coat will be trying to decide on a color — it comes in 13 different shades, including two different camouflage options!

“SO WARM. So stylish! I am so in love with this coat. It seems very well put together and heavy and sturdy. I am usually a size L/XL in everything and the large fits perfectly with the zippers up on the sides. It gets a bit narrow around the hips but it’s adjustable so it’s fine! Absolutely love this coat.”

Olympia Waterproof Down Stadium Coat

Best winter coat for tall women
olive green stadium coat
Eddie Bauer

Buy on Eddie Bauer ($239.40, Originally $399)

Why we like it:

  • Machine wash, tumble dry
  • Fleece-lined collar and pockets
  • Comes in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes

If you’re tall, it can be tough to find a winter coat that keeps you warm through the hips and fits your long arms without tugging. Luckily, this Eddie Bauer coat comes in tall sizes, so you can find just the right fit! Besides that, it’s extra long, waterproof, and filled with premium down to keep you cozy. Zippered hand pockets and a two-way front zipper are useful additions, and an adjustable hood with removable faux fur accent makes it stylish and ups the warmth factor!

“I am a size 10 and I bought a medium. Haven’t had a good quality coat for a long time. Walked out of the mall with this on and I felt like I could enjoy being outside on a cold winter day. Design is sleek … makes one look like you have a woman’s body — back bustles in and shapely in the front. So warm and so pretty. I am extremely happy with this coat.”

The Gigi Parka

Best vegan winter coat
best vegan coat

Buy on Noize ($169, originally $260)

Why we like it:

  • Made from 100 percent animal-free, sustainable, PETA-approved materials
  • Available in 8 gorgeous colors
  • Stylish and warm

If you’re looking for a coat that’s cruelty-free and contains no material sourced from animals, you can’t do better than a coat from Noize, which has the PETA seal of approval and makes a wide range of vegan outerwear. We love their Gigi Parka, and would wear it whether we were vegan or not! It’s super stylish, with a nipped-in waist and asymmetrical front zipper and a sweetheart hood lined with vegan fur. And with eight lovely shades to choose from in sizes from XS to XXL , you’re sure to find one that suits you!

“Absolutely love this coat! I got this thinking it would be a fun weekend look but it’s surprisingly very professional and gives a great figure — definitely office professional friendly. I am 5’2″ and got the small, and it is absolutely perfect. There is a nice and thick fleece top to this and theft-proof pockets which are added bonuses. Could not be happier!! Cute and cruelty free!”

Columbia Mountain Croo Long Down Jacket

Best Plus Sized women’s winter coat
best plus size winter coat
Columbia Sportswear

Buy on Columbia Sportswear ($240)

Why we like it:

  • Available in 1X, 2X, and 3X
  • Comes in black or olive green as well as blue (pictured)
  • Waterproof

This plus-size coat from Columbia Sportswear can stand up to any storm, with its waterproof fabric and tightly sealed seams that keep your body heat in. Made with 650-fill-power down insulation, it’s seriously warm. Ribbed cuffs, a drop-tail hem (that means it’s longer in back than in front), an attached hood, and a collar that snaps up complete the look and will keep you dry no matter how blustery it gets outside. Zippered pockets, soft elastic cuffs, and a drawstring waist are much-appreciated touches, as well!

The North Face Gotham Parka

best hooded parka for women
North Face Gotham Parka

Buy on Nordstrom ($249)

Why we like it:

  • Classic hooded parka with premium down insulation
  • Comes in 4 great colors
  • Adjustable hood

This hooded parka is made with 550-fill-power down insulation, so no matter how low the mercury drops, you’ll be toasty warm. It comes in gray, pink, maroon, and white, and can be machine-washed and tumble dried. The shiny finish comes from 100 percent recycled nylon that has a water-repellent finish to keep rain, sleet, and snow from getting in. It also has zippered hand pockets, plus an inside pocket that will give you plenty of places to keep your things safe and dry.

“This jacket is just right; the length and weight are exactly what I was looking for. The size is perfect, even with a sweater or hoodie underneath. The pockets are nice and deep. The hood fits well and doesn’t fall down over my eyes. I love everything about it!”

Riley Sherpa Coat

best winter coats for women

Buy on Anthropologie ($298)

Why we like it:

  • Mimics the look and feel of warm, textural wool
  • Menswear-inspired style
  • Oversized fit

If you’re looking for something other than your “sleeping bag” style down coat, this Anthropologie beauty is it! This slouchy, overcoat-style wool-inspired winter coat offers plenty of warmth, as well as front flap pockets for your mask and phone. What else could you need? It’s also machine-washable, so just pop it into the washer and you’re all set. Reviewers are loving the look and style of the jacket, but advise that it has an oversized look to it.

“Forget the umbrella – the hood is just perfect for that and adds warmth to the coat but doesn’t crawl up the neck. Your choice – zip or snap all the way down the front…Clever placement of the sherpa on the back for extra style.”

Bean’s Down Puffer Coat

Best full length womens down winter coat
down puffer coat
L.L. Bean

Buy on L.L. Bean ($369)

Why we like it:

  • Falls below the knees for maximum warmth
  • Adjustable hood and two-way zipper for easier movement
  • Made with specially-treated down that’s water-repellent and won’t clump

The Bean’s Down Puffer will keep you warm from head to toe! Or at least, from head to knees. Crafted with L.L. Bean’s signature down that’s treated to be water-repellent and resist clumping, it’s surprisingly light yet awesomely toasty. And if you’re worried about having a full range of movement — something that can be tricky in a full-length coat — you’ll love that this coat has side slips with snaps, an adjustable, insulated hood, and a two-way zipper that lets you open it at the bottom or the top! Made for those times when you need to stay really warm and really dry, this full length coat is one of the best winter coats for women you can buy.

Why we like it:

  • Lightweight
  • Stylish
  • Highly water-repellent

Need something to keep you dry in a squall, but don’t want a heavy winter coat? This Patagonia water-resistant jacket is just the ticket. It’s a light, quilted jacket coated with a durable water-repellent finish, and available in gray, white, or black — a basic that’s easy to throw on and super stylish, as well!

“I bought this jacket since Southern California has been having some cooler temps and rain. So far this jacket has been perfect, it’s not too puffy but it still keeps me warm and has stayed dry. Also I’ve gotten lots of compliments. I usually wear a 10 and I purchased this jacket in a large for a little extra room.”

Ultralight Packable Down Coat With Hood

best value down coat
Lands’ End

Buy on Lands’ End ($169.95)

Why we like it:

  • Rolls up and packs into a pocket
  • 800-fill-power down insulation for serious warmth
  • Comes in 6 stylish colors

Believe it or not, this entire coat can be rolled up and packed into its own pocket, making it the ultimate in portability. It’s also a great value, at less than $200 for an 800-fill-power down insulated coat that falls below the hip. It’s not bulky, but it will keep you warm — and yes, it has a hood, too! Water-resistant, stylish, and available in six great colors, this coat is an affordable option you’ll love.

“This coat was made for me! It felt quite perfect the moment I slipped it on. I love, love, love the adjustable hood (a marvel of engineering), the two-way zipper, the lightweight feel, the car coat length, the flattering quilting, the navy blue color, and its simplicity of style.”

Eddie Bauer Sun Valley Down Parka

Most Popular Down Coat on Amazon
sun valley down coat

Buy on Amazon ($179.40)

Why we like it:

  • Front pocket is the perfect size to hold a phone
  • Durable, water-repellent finish
  • Warm fleece lining

Which of the seven colors will you choose if you buy this coat? That might be the toughest decision to make when picking out a new winter coat on Amazon, because this one is so popular and beloved by happy customers. Eddie Bauer’s Sun Valley Down Parka is made with 650-fill down, which offers warmth without the bulk, and the shell is crafted with a metallic cross-dying process that adds a subtle sheen of iridescence you’ll love. The two-way zipper means you can adjust it from the top or bottom for comfortable movement, and the fleece lining feels cozy, even over layers. (Yes, the pockets are fleece-lined and zip up!)

“I live in Wisconsin and bought this coat prior to a trip that included Chicago, Minneapolis, and Amsterdam. One coat had to handle all three places. This one was absolutely perfect! Chicago was cold, Amsterdam was cool and overcast, with rain thrown into the mix on our last day, and Minneapolis was downright frigid — meaning never above zero and as low as 19 below. I was comfortable in all three places, as well as at home since I returned. Another advantage is that the coat stuffed easily into the overhead compartment on the airplane without taking up much space. A nice feature is that it has a zipper pocket on the left chest that fits my iPhone 8 Plus. I am particularly pleased because I returned two or three disappointing coats before I finally got this one. It was definitely worth waiting for.”

Canada Goose Merritt Down Parka

canada goose merrit down parka

Buy on Nordstrom ($850)

Why we like it:

  • Will last forever — a great investment
  • 625-power-fill down
  • Thermal hood

If you haven’t noticed people wearing winter coats with those “Canada Goose Arctic Program” patches on them, you haven’t been paying attention. Wildly popular, these Canada Goose parkas are pricey, but worth it if you are looking to invest in a winter coat that will keep you warm and dry in any weather. This thigh-length choice, available in classic black, has a thermal hood and elastic cuffs to keep the cold out and your body heat in, fleece-lined hand warmer pockets with a snap closure, as well as front snap pockets, and is extremely well-made and durable. Note that it’s dry clean only, and that it is definitely not vegan-friendly or cruelty-free, if those things are important to you. It is, however, extremely warm and stylish!

Canada Goose Shelburne Genuine Coyote Fur Trim Down Parka

Best Red Winter Coat for Women
red canada goose coat

Buy on Nordstrom ($995)

Why we like it:

  • Fur-trimmed hood keeps out the chill
  • Available in 6 colors including this standout red
  • Stands up to extreme cold

Little Red Riding Hood was never so warm — but maybe she would have been, if she’d used that big bad wolf’s fur to line her cloak! This gorgeous red coat from Canada Goose has a hood trimmed with genuine coyote fur, and is insulated with 625-power-fill down to keep you warm on the coldest days. The pockets are lined with fleece, the hood is adjustable, and the coat hits at mid-thigh. We love the red, but it comes in five other colors as well!

“I purchased the Canada Goose Coyote Fur Parka as a necessary investment for the extreme cold we have here in Chicago. I can only say it is one of the best purchases I have ever made! This coat is designed for extreme temperatures and it does not disappoint! The coyote fur around the hood is used because the fur never freezes nor does it hold water. The coat’s quality is superior, durable and let’s not forget, fashionable! Please make this investment and you we be delighted you did.”

Amazon Essentials Lightweight Hooded Puffer Coat

amazon essentials black winter coat

Buy on Amazon (From $38.98)

Why we like it:

  • Extremely affordable (under $50!)
  • Available in 11 colors and sizes XS to XXL
  • Packs into included carrying pouch

Amazon Essentials is known for offering affordable basics, and this coat is right on the money. Still, if you’re looking for a black coat (or red, or pink, or yellow, or navy — it comes in 11 colors!) then this will do the trick. Bonus: machine washable and dryer-friendly!

I love this jacket! I was looking for a longer down jacket, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money and this is perfect! I am usually between a medium and a large, so I ordered the large and it fits very well. I love that it has a hood and that it is lightweight, but very warm! I am very happy with this purchase!

Eddie Bauer Girl on the Go Trench Coat

Best Winter Trench Coat for Women
Eddie Bauer winter trench coat
Eddie Bauer

Buy on Eddie Bauer ($111.75, Originally $149)

Why we like it:

  • Comes in four colors
  • Available in petite, regular, tall, and plus sizes, XS to XXL
  • Machine wash, tumble dry

Winter doesn’t only mean snow, it often means rain as well! Or the dreaded “wintry mix,” which as far as we can tell just means sleet. In any case, you’ll likely want a rain jacket, or trench coat, that can double as a winter coat in your wardrobe of outerwear. We love this one because it has princess seams for a slimming, flattering fit, an adjustable, removable hood, and comes in four lovely colors. It also has plenty of pockets — two on the outside and one on the inside — that zip up to keep your stuff secure.

“I bought this jacket for a February trip to NYC. The forecast called for rain one of the days. This jacket was warm enough for the colder days with a hat and scarf, and it kept me dry when it rained. I definitely recommend!”

Fleurette Stand Collar Wool Coat

Best wool winter coat for women
best winter coats

Buy on Nordstrom (from $524.50)

Why we like it:

  • Soft, blue-gray color reminds us of the winter sky
  • Beautifully tailored
  • Roomy side pockets

A wool winter coat is essential for those events when you just can’t wear a puffer coat, and we love this one from Nordstrom. Side pockets keep your hands warm, and a button front helps keep the heat in — but this isn’t the coat for a bitterly cold day walking around. However, if you need a winter coat for a fancy occasion, this is the one!

“This coat is one of the most beautiful coats I’ve ever owned. It’s such a high quality and it definitely is for someone who needs a winter coat for work.”

ForeMode Wool Peacoat

Best red coat for winter
best winter coats

Buy on Amazon (from $28.49)

Why we like it:

  • Gorgeous red color
  • Has a slimming fit-and-flare design
  • Available in sizes up to XXL

Add a pop of color to your wardrobe with this fit-and-flare-inspired peacoat. If red isn’t your favorite color, then you may love one of the other shades it comes in including green, blue, white, and black. For the days when you wish to ditch your puffy jacket, slip on this dressy peacoat that includes an adjustable belt for a slimming effect. The cotton and polyester blend material will help keep you warm on those colder days. Just don’t machine wash this jacket, like with typical wool coats this one is dry-clean only.

One reviewer gushed over how flattering the design is saying, “Buy this jacket it is soo beautiful. It fits perfectly with a little extra room to wear a sweater if need be.”
