The Camera Kate Middleton Started Taking Royal Photos With Is Surprisingly Affordable

Tags:

Kate Middleton has happily taken on the role of family photographer, snapping cute shots of Prince William and their kids, George, Charlotte, and Louis, over the years. Now you can follow in her footsteps by getting your hands on the Duchess’ favorite cameras.

According to the sleuths at Hello! magazine, Kate is a big fan of Canon cameras. More specifically, she was seen using a Canon PowerShot G12 ($188, Amazon) while traveling around Canada with William in 2012. This type of camera is in-between your regular “point and shoot” and professional-grade options for higher quality results without spending a ton of cash. They’re also more compact and easier to carry around while on the road.

A few years later, Kate showed off pro-level camera work by using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II ($1,299, Amazon) to snap the first photo shared of George with little sis Charlotte back in 2015. This seems to still be her go-to for family photos they plan to share, like the kiddos’ annual birthday portraits, but we’re sure she still gets plenty use out of the more budget-friendly option for her own family collection.

Royal photographer James Whatling told the magazine he’s impressed not only by Kate’s camera choices, but her photo composition and keen eye for details most amateur photogs overlook. “What a lot of people don’t do is look at the picture as a whole, including the background and how it might distract from the subject. Kate clearly understands how important it is to take everything into account when creating a portrait, including picking a nice background,” he told the magazine. “That’s a real skill.”

We couldn’t agree with Whatling more! Especially when it comes to super-sweet photos like the one shown below, which was shared on Christmas Eve last year:

Whatling said he is looking forward to seeing Kate taking on the “ultimate challenge” — getting all three kids to stay still long enough for a group shot. We’re sure the Duchess is up to the task!
