Yvonne Lin, like most working moms in New York City, has to ride the subway twice a day during rush hour. If you've never had the experience, count yourself lucky. People are crammed next to one another, shoulder to shoulder. It's tough to get a seat, unless someone offers you one--and they rarely do.
Lin, who's eight months pregnant with her second child, started noticing a strange thing during her first pregnancy. While women were quick to give her a seat, men didn't bother. During her first pregnancy, she started carrying around a special card, hoping to give it to the first guy who gave up his seat on the train. No takers.
This pregnancy, she had a special statue made. It was of the Incredible Hulk and had this message: "#1 DECENT DUDE. First man to offer subway seat to pregnant woman throughout Two Pregnancies." She carried around that statue for months.
Then, just as Lin was about to give up, a man did something totally unexpected on her train ride home. She'd been standing in front of him when he finally looked up from his phone. He quickly offered Lin his seat, apologizing for not noticing her before. That's when Lin gave him his prize, and snapped his photo for posterity.
She didn't find out much about the guy, except that he's a dad of two (so at least he had a little empathy). Said Lin: “If men just gave up their seats the same amount of time as women do, then it would be no problem."
