The 5 Types of Piles You Should Make While Decluttering Your Closet

Tags:

It’s spring, and that means it’s time for a home overhaul — especially if you’ve noticed clutter becoming particularly piled up in your closet. It’s so easy to just shut the door after picking out our outfits every day and ignore everything else that might be crowding around the floor and shelves.

Personally, I’m someone who’s guilty of never being able to get rid of items that have even the smallest memory attached to them. After months of letting my collection of things grow almost too large to even use my closet properly, and now that I have all these time on my hands, I decided to finally do something about it. While rummaging through all of my items, I discovered the key is separating each of those into five specific piles:

  1. Things to Move to Another Room
  2. Things to Donate to Charity
  3. Things to Give to Someone I Know
  4. Things to Toss Out
  5. Things to Think Over

You might be raising an eyebrow at the last category. It’s obviously not going to be helpful to just shove everything into that pile and put the chore off indefinitely, but there’s an important catch when it comes to those items. Instead of slipping back into the same routine, stick all of the items you’re mulling over into a box with label dated for six months or year in the future. If anything is still left inside it by the time you reach that date, it clearly wasn’t on your mind enough to justify keeping it around! It’s up to you whether you decide to toss those items or give them away, but it definitely shouldn’t be taking up space in your closet any more.

This method works for other areas around the house, too. You can even get kids involved in the decluttering process with this easy trick. It’s just a matter of actually sticking to your goal of getting rid of things you don’t need.
