Online Calculator Can Tell You How at Risk You Are for Breast Cancer

Ever wondered what your risk of getting breast cancer actually is? Well, now you can figure it out yourself online. The calculator takes into account your medical information, including a family history of breast cancer and any previous diagnosis, as well as other factors like age and ethnicity.

It also helps if you know your breast-tissue density and any previous biopsy results, as both can be risk factors for cancer. (If you don't, your doctor can probably clue you in.) After you've answered the prompts, the online tool then calculates your risk in the next five years and the next 10.

The doctor who developed it, Dr. Charlotte Gard of New Mexico State University, has a family history--both her grandmother and mother got the disease. And that's what inspired her to help other women figure out the risk--and then take action.

You can find the calculator here at the National Cancer Institute-funded Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC).
