Family Dollar: Hundreds of Locations Will Close

Sad news for employees and shoppers of Family Dollar, which announced today that hundreds of stores will close. It seems that the 323 Family Dollar locations–which are owned by a small Charlotte-based chain Dollar Express, and not involved in a 2015 merger with Dollar Tree–will be closing this spring. Layoff notices began going out on this week.

Up to 2,700 part-time and full-time store employees around the country may be losing their jobs, according to the Charlotte Observer. Multiple Dollar Express employees told the Observer they were informed that their last day of employment would be on or around June 2. Stores will begin their liquidation processes soon, said the employees, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution.

While it will be disappointing for customers in those areas to lose yet another local place to score a good deal, our thoughts are focused on the employees whose livelihoods are now threatened. Sources say the deal was unexpected for corporate employees of Dollar Express, whose jobs may be at risk. Some of those employees had moved their families to Charlotte from faraway states like Texas, Montana and California. It remains unclear whether all store and corporate employees will lose their jobs as ownership changes hands. A Dollar General representative would not respond Monday to questions about employment.

In 2015, Dollar Tree purchased Family Dollar, and the majority of its stores, as part of a merger.

A sign of the times? Perhaps, though even as more and more retailers lose customers to online shopping, we know that millions of budget-conscious shoppers still frequent their local dollar store. Hopefully, that doesn’t have to change.

Our thoughts will stay with the employees who will be impacted during this transition period.
