New App Warns Users If a McDonald’s Ice Cream Machine Is Broken

If you’re a McFlurry fan, chances are you’ve dealt with the frustration of a broken McDonald’s ice cream machine. This problem happens so often at the fast food chain that it’s become a popular internet joke and even an occasional meme.

But if you’ve recently pulled up to the McDonald’s drive-thru to request your sweet treat of choice, only to be disappointed, prepare to be disappointed no longer: There is now an app that tells you whether a McDonald’s ice cream machine is broken or working. Yes, really.

The new app Ice Check allows you to search the McDonald’s locations in your area to see if the ones near you have working ice cream machines or not. It’s super easy, too: All you have to do is check the color of the ice cream icon at your McDonald’s of choice. If the icon is gray, that means the machine is down. But if the icon is bright pink — your frozen dessert awaits!

“I came up with the idea for the app around a year ago, after a late night Oreo McFlurry craving went unfulfilled due to the ice cream machine being down,” app creator Raina McLeod said in an interview with Buzzfeed.

The app is based off of user-generated data, so that means the most recent vote from a user will show whether the ice cream machine is raring to go or not. Keep in mind: If it’s been a while since someone voted, the status may (sadly) not be up to date. The good news is that you can update it to let other people know the current situation — and help keep tabs on when it finally changes again.

Notice your McDonald’s isn’t included on the map? There’s a “contact” section where you can send out an email with any comments or questions you have — and do your part to help out your fellow fans.
