What Are the Cheapest Days to Fly?

When it comes to airfare, traveling can be expensive. I remember an old coworker once told me that his trick to keeping his vacation from draining his bank account was picking Super Bowl weekend to fly — the seats are usually cheaper since almost everyone else is either glued to their TVs or lucky enough to already be at the stadium watching the big game in person. That tip made me wonder what other times of the year might be perfect for saving a buck on flights.

According to advice from Fare Compare, there are four big “dead zones” throughout the year: the first two weeks of december, most of January, parts of spring when students aren’t traveling for spring break, and late August and October when prices tend to drop. The 2018 Annual Airfare Study, however, explains how the timing of finding good deals on airfare depends on what season we’re in and searching the appropriate amount of days in advance. Here’s how they broke down the best times to buy based on their results from looking at 917,000,000 flights:

  • Winter: 62 days in advance.
  • Spring: 90 days in advance.
  • Summer: 47 days in advance.
  • Fall: 69 days in advance.

That means if you want to plan a family vacation for July, you should start looking to book your tickets around mid-May. They claim it could make a difference of about $200 when it comes to summer travel, which is of course the most popular time of the year for folks to start their getaways. The most important thing to remember is that these prices can change frequently throughout the year, so you should be ready to buy your tickets as soon as you find a great deal. Taking extra time to mull it over will most likely end up with that flight selling out before you make up your mind. Now you just need to decide where you want to go on your next trip!
