Playing outside has got to be one of the greatest perks of childhood--yet sadly, too few kids head outdoors when they want to have fun anymore. So it should give people joy to see a bunch of grade-school kids--ages 6 to 10--kicking a soccer ball on a grassy lot. Except, apparently, in Birmingham, AL.
For days, residents had been calling the police to complain about local kids playing in the grassy field belonging to a tractor equipment company. They may not have known that the owner had said it was okay for the kids to play there. But to shut down the calls, a few police officers showed up--and joined the fun.
One of the officers, Jordan Burke, posted a video of the cops playing with the kids to Facebook--with a plea to nearby residents to stop calling them every time the children were out there.
The local Fox station picked up the story. There, Burke explained that the children had no where else to play--the nearest playground was several miles away, too far for these kids to walk. Besides, these first responders want the kids to see that police officers aren't people to be feared, but instead people who can have a positive impact.
