Yes, You Can Drink Wine on the Keto Diet — But Only These Specific Ones

Is wine keto? If you’re interested in trying the ketogenic diet, that might be a question on your mind. And hey, we don’t blame you: The keto diet is well known for being an extremely low-carb eating plan, so it’s natural to wonder how alcohol could possibly fit into the arrangement. Here’s the good news: Not every alcoholic beverage is totally flooded with carbs, and that includes select wines.

First off, it’s worth noting that not every bottle of wine is keto-friendly. After all, certain wines get their signature sweet taste from being packed with sugar — aka carbs. That means that dessert wines such as sherry, port, and ice wine are off the table. Wines that tend to verge on the sweeter or fruitier side, such as moscato, may also be a little risky, especially if you can’t find the nutritional information. (And let’s face it, carb-counting and calorie-counting are not exactly the best happy-hour conversations.)

The most keto-friendly wines out there tend to be red wines, especially the dry and very dry ones, according to Keto Logic. Some popular examples include cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and merlot. If you prefer white wines, there are a few great dry options for you: sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, and chardonnay are popular keto-friendly wine choices. And if you feel like making a toast, Champagne is also a good wine for keto dieters, according to The Ketogenic Diet.

Just be sure to double-check the nutritional information on any booze before buying; after all, different companies may prepare the wine in different ways — and you wouldn’t want any extra sugar added in without your knowledge. As with any healthy diet, make sure to not overdo it with the booze. According to Perfect Keto, the proper serving size for your keto-friendly wine of choice should be 5 fl oz. If you’re at a restaurant and aren’t sure if the waiter over-poured, it may be in your best interest to stick to a one-drink maximum for the night.

Remember: Always talk to your doctor before trying any new eating plan, especially one as restrictive as the keto diet.
