Joe's Crab Shack Closes at Least 41 Locations

Sad news for Joe's Crab Shack fans: The restaurant chain has shut down at least 41 of its locations in multiple states over the past several weeks. And even sadder news for Joe's Crab Shack employees: Allegedly, some of these locations failed to inform them that they were shuttering until the day of the closures.

“I showed up for work… and was told to go back home,” said one former Joe’s employee in New York, whose location closed earlier in the month.

Another Virginia-based employee said he didn't hear about the closure until he was about to start his shift that very day with his fellow workers.

"Yesterday… Everything was fine. I even picked up two shifts to work," Devoshia Jones said, before explaining that a co-worker was the one who broke the news to him. "When she came in, all the managers were here. All the corporate managers were here. The tables were flipped upside down and they shut everything out."

Though at least 41 locations have closed since the beginning of August, the closures have likely been in the works for months. Ignite Restaurant Group, which is the parent company of Joe's, filed for bankruptcy in June of this year. The company was later purchased by Landry’s Inc., with the deal finalized on Aug. 17.

As it stands now, Joe's Crab Shack has 72 locations, with more than 30 of those being in Texas, California, and Florida. However, it's unclear if more of these locations will close in the near future. Ignite’s CEO, Tilman Fertitta, said earlier this month that “we’ll probably end up with about 60."

So sad. But it's a good reminder to always support businesses you love and consider buying a meal at one if their parking lot looks empty. You never know if it'll be your last chance to give them a helping hand!
