Several Instant Pot Models Are Overheating and Melting, Company Warns

Tags:

UPDATE (2/27) — Just days after Instant Pot warned customers about certain models melting, the company has issued an official recall on some multicookers. Specifically, the recall affects certain batches of the Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker.

The affected batch codes include the following numbers: 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734, and 1746. So if you own this multicooker, be sure to check the bottom of the product for its batch code to see if it’s affected. If your code matches, stop using your multicooker immediately, and call the company at 1-800-828-7280 Ext. 2 for more info.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE (2/26) — Instant Pot fans everywhere are horrified after hearing the news that some of the company’s cooking products are melting. But before you panic and throw your beloved Instant Pot in the trash, be sure to take a close look at what specific models have this serious defect. Because as much as we want to avoid our kitchen appliances melting, we also want to avoid tossing out beloved cookers that don’t need to be tossed.

First of all, it’s important to know that the hugely popular electric pressure cookers are not affected by this problem. However, if you happen to own an Instant Pot Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker, it may in fact have the defect. Rather than using pressure cooking, this multicooker features eight built-in smart programs to cook dishes in a variety of different ways with the push of a button. It can slow cook, sear/sauté, cook rice, steam, stew, roast, bake, and warm. The company announced that it has received reports of some of these Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicookers overheating, causing “melting damage” to the underside of the product.

Instant Pot says this specific issue only affects the following batch codes: 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734, and 1746. You can find the batch code on a silver label on the bottom of the cooker. If your cooker’s batch code matches one of the affected models, the company wants you to immediately stop using the product.

Instant Pot has not yet given customers any info about replacing the product, but the company did say more news is on the way in the coming weeks, according to USA Today. In the meantime, the company is working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to get to the bottom of this scary safety issue.

Be sure all your fellow Instant Pot fans are in the know!
