There is nothing more frustrating than when your roll of leftover wrapping paper falls over in your closet, causing it to unravel, wrinkle and sometimes even rip. Now not only is your closet a mess, but the beautiful wrapping paper you were hoping to reuse next year seems unusable. Lucky for you, we asked organization experts how to store wrapping paper and for their best wrapping paper hacks so that it stays in perfect shape for whenever you need it next.

How to store wrapping paper: 5 easy vertical methods

These 5 genius tips will help save you money by keeping your wrapping paper safe, ensuring you don’t have to buy more. Bonus? They will help keep your closet space organized too!

1. Use cardboard tubes

It might sound strange to use your empty wrapping paper tubes in order to save your leftover wrapping paper, but it actually works really well! Simply cut the long empty cardboard tube lengthwise, then slip it around the tube of wrapping paper. This will protect the paper from rips and keep it from unraveling, even if it does tumble over. Place the rolls in a tall waste paper basket or bin and voila!

2. Hang it with shower curtain clips

A cheap way to keep wrapping paper rolls off the floor and utilize unused space in your closet? Grab some shower hooks (Buy fom Amazon, $6.84) and some Command hooks (Buy from Amazon, $9.28). “Rather than clutter your closet floor with bulky bins, make use of vertical space to store holiday wrapping,” says organizing expert Ashley Jones Hatcher. “Just adhere a few stick-on hooks to the back of a door, attach a shower curtain clip ring to each roll of paper, then hang them on the hooks!”

3. Place it in a clever caddy

Like to store all of your supplies together? Instead of investing in an organizer, make your own wrapping station using a cardboard wine box — pick one up for free at a liquor store. The slots are the perfect size for rolls of paper, and you can stash scissors, gift tags and more in the other compartments, says Stephanie Bailey, a storage expert and owner of PrudentPennyPincher.com. “No more wasting time searching for supplies!” Stow the box in a closet and pull it out when you’re ready to start wrapping.

4. Keep it in a garment bag

Forget spending $20 or more on storage bins just for wrapping paper — just grab a garment bag! Simply stand the rolls lengthwise inside, zip up the bag to keep the paper protected from dust, then hang in a closet out of the way, says organizer Marty Basher. “And if you have any extra sheets of paper too, simply drape them over the hanger inside the bag. It will keep them from getting wrinkled or creased.”

Use a plastic over-the-door organizer to keep them contained in one easy-to-reach spot. Simply snip the bottoms off 2 to 3 pockets in a row (depending on roll length), leaving the bottom pocket intact. Then slide the roll of paper inside. Bonus: Supplies like ribbons, scissors, tape, and tags fit easily into the other pockets!
