5 Things to Consider When Finding the Perfect Leather Sofa for Your Home

Tags:

Finding the perfect leather sofa is not always as simple as walking into a store and buying the first one that catches your eye. There are many factors that should influence the style of sofa and type of leather you choose.

The first thing to consider is the overarching style of your home and the importance of selecting a sofa to suit. Although timeless, a bulky chesterfield will look totally out of place in a minimalist abode. Other lifestyle factors such as whether you have kids or pets (or both), where you live, and whether you simply want to make a style statement or you’re looking to invest in a quality sofa, will also come into play.

Here, Sarah Muir, an interior designer at Coco Republic, shares five important things to remember when buying a leather sofa.

1. Find a sofa that suits your existing style.

The addition of leather into a living room setting can be both timeless and modern. Leather sofas add depth and beauty to various interior styles, so the first consideration when selecting a sofa is aesthetic. Tailored and tufted leather sofas suit classic homes, while streamlined sofas with square arms and cleaner lines complement a contemporary space. Leather in any interior adds rich sophistication.

2. Leather is low-maintanance.

Leather can be far more durable than other fabric upholstery like linen or velvet. Low-maintenance and resistance to dirt and staining are key reasons families or busy households opt for a leather sofa. A leather sofa also suits high traffic areas such as hotels and office spaces, and periodic dusting with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient for day-to-day maintenance and a quick clean with leather wipes.

3. Leather will age over time.

Since leather is a natural product with inherent unique characteristics, your sofa will soften with age, which adds to the appeal of living with leather. Know that a beautiful, natural leather sofa is not going to stay perfectly as new. Embrace the character and wear that comes with time.

Natural leathers are so called because of their natural and uncoated nature. In this regard, natural leathers may incur marks or discrepancy of color where it has come into contact with belt buckles or studding for example. This is a standard occurrence and forms part of the leathers’ character and uniqueness.

4. There are various types of leather sofas.

Not all leather sofas are made the same. Some leathers are stretched, dyed, and coated. Similarly, frames are constructed of different materials as you go from store to store.

5. Protecting your sofa.

Consider where your leather sofa will be located on your floor plan, and avoid a position with direct harsh sun for long periods of time, as you would with any natural product.
