10 Tips to Mix and Match Couch Pillows Like a Pro

Tags:

Interior design relies on couch pillows. After all, they’re known as the red lipstick of the lounge for a reason. That’s why mixing and matching couch pillows is one of the easiest ways to get the satisfaction of redecorating without the hassle. We’ve rounded up 10 tips to keep in mind when arranging pillows on your couch.

1. Look for florals that will coordinate with colors you’re already using in your home, and balance strong prints with plenty of neutral surfaces.

2. If you have a neutral-color theme in your living room, select two or three bold colors to inject a little depth into the space. The more neutral your room, the brighter your couch pillows can be.

3. Don’t be afraid to combine multiple textures, such as velvet, silk, and fur. Combining heavy textures with lighter ones across your couch pillows will keep your home looking cozy yet modern.

4. Try changing the orientation of your existing couch pillows to give the room a new feel.

5. When you’re thinking about updating your room, get inspiration from a variety of sources. If you love the colors and print in your favorite silk scarf, then use that as inspiration when looking for beautiful prints on couch pillows.

6. Use a “karate chop” in the middle of the couch pillow to create a crease in them — this will make them seem more lived-in and loved. It will also help break up uniform shapes, and unite couch pillows of different colors, sizes, or families.

7. Having all your couch pillows in the same regimented size can look very formal. Combine couch pillows of different sizes and shapes — such as oval or oblong — to create a more homey and welcoming look.

8. You can still have a gender-neutral room with couch pillows — gray and yellow is a great combination of colors that lifts a space without being overly feminine.

9. Contrast block colors with horizontal lines and vertical lines in narrow spaces to play with the eyes.

10. If your home consists of earthy, neutral colors, add some metallic to maintain a textured and edgy finish. Keep it chic and simple, and stick to the monochrome for a sophisticated edge.
