12 Tips on How to Choose the Right Curtains For Your Space

A lush set of curtains can instantly elevate the style factor in any room in the house, so it’s important to make sure you choose the right style and fabric to suit your space and needs. From sheers, to black-out, to every  pattern in-between, the possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing your curtains.

Lighter fabrics can add a soft and dreamy touch to a room, while heavier fabrics will boast superior light-blocking properties and are a practical choice for homes in urban areas.

To help you out, we asked Cam Warwick, the managing director of Warwick Fabrics, for his top tips on how to select the right ones.

Sheer or black-out?

Consider what you want to achieve. Curtains can be both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Knowing what you want from your window treatment will make deciding on fabric easier, as some fabrics are more suitable for blacking out light than others.

For rooms that get a lot of afternoon sunlight, man-made fibers are a better choice as they won’t fade or deteriorate as quickly as natural fibers like linen or cotton.

If you love the look of linen but not the creasing, linen-look polyester sheers are a great solution.

To create privacy without compromising on your view, consider sheer curtains. Sheers will allow natural light into a room and provide an opulent and luxurious feel. The other benefits of sheers is they help to create the impression of space and are an inexpensive way to dress a window.

Look for lead-weighted curtains to maximize the available drop length as well as getting a perfectly finished hem.

Layer it Up

Consider layering your window treatments to create a soft and elegant look. For example, hang a sheer curtain over the top of your roller blinds or plantation shutters.

Blind Alternatives

If sheer curtains won’t work in your space, opt for an unstructured sheer roman blind to provide a similar look.

Material Matters

To block out light in areas of your home such as the bedroom or movie room, a triple weave fabric will provide block out with some light filtering. For 100 percent block-out, choose a coated fabric.

Track Tricks

If you have a double-track system, consider hanging the sheer in front of the drape for an on-trend look instead of the traditional way of having the sheer behind the drape.

Be Bold

Don’t be afraid to use pattern and color in your drapes. It’s a great way to add interest and personality to a room and with so many different styles to choose from, you can go as subtle or bold as you like.

Luxe Look

If you’re after a luxurious look, consider velvet drapery. Not only will it provide beautiful texture to a space, it also has great thermal qualities.

Ask the Experts

And last but not least, consult with your trade professional before making any final decisions. They will be able to provide expert advice on style, the requirements of the space, and its limitations.
