New ‘Everything-Proof’ Coating Is on the Way to Save You From Spills

Imagine a world in which you could accidentally spill coffee all over your computer or phone, and it would be perfectly safe. Or maybe take your imagination even further to a world where you wouldn’t leave an embarrassing red wine stain in your home for all your guests to see. Thanks to a team of extraordinarily talented scientists, that world may actually not be so far away as you might think.

According to new research published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, researchers at the University of Michigan have come up with a new “everything-proof” coating that might just be the game-changer of every mom or grandma’s dream. This coating works with a combination of fluorinated polyurethane and fluorodecyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. Its durability, combined with an ability to not let things stick to it, allows the repellent coating to form, protecting surfaces from “everything” in its path — including oil, water, and even peanut butter.

“I have a 2-year-old at home, so for me, this particular project was about more than just the science,” said researcher Anish Tuteja PhD. “We’re excited about what this could do to make homes and daycares cleaner places, and we’re looking at a variety of possible applications in industry as well.”

As incredible as this news sounds, the one downer about the research is that this everything-proof coating is not available for purchase just yet — and as you might imagine, this rare, innovative product will come with an extra-hefty price tag when it is. That said, manufacturers are working diligently to scale up the product and hopefully lower the cost for those of us out there who tend to be clumsy at times.

Honestly, with all the messes we’ve had lately, we have to admit we’re tempted to offer all our money right now!

As we anxiously await this product, here are the most-effective spring-cleaning tasks we can do right now:
