Wearing Socks to Bed Will Help You Doze Off Faster and Get Better Sleep
Does sleeping with socks on actually improve a night of shut-eye? Some people swear by it, while others find it just plain weird. But it turns out that there may actually be definitive proof that this nighttime routine is better for your health.
Jess Andrade, DO recently added her two cents to the conversation on TikTok. “Wearing socks makes your feet warm, and this opens up blood vessels that cool the body down,” she explained in her video. “The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed. So people who wear socks to bed tend to fall asleep faster.”
Dr. Andrade summed up the scientific reasons for keeping your feet toasty at night pretty quickly, but it appears that larger research backs up her claim. The National Sleep Foundation provides a similar line of thinking for why it approves of a sleeping-in-socks habit. Moreover, a 2018 Korean study found that participants in their 20s who wore socks to bed fell sleep in roughly seven and a half minutes compared to the 15 minutes it took for people who didn’t wear socks. A Dutch study reported similar findings for people of all ages, though there wasn’t as big of a discrepancy amongst sock wearers and non-sock wearers who were in their mid-fifties and older, likely because our sense of temperature shifts over time as we age.
