If this sounds a little weird to you, you’re not alone. I thought the same thing when I first read about this trick. But after doing some digging and trying it out myself, there’s a lot to be said for this strange tip.
Sprinkling watermelon with salt is traditionally a southern thing, and after giving it a go, I can see why it’s now gaining popularity all over the country. The opposing savory flavor really brings out the sweetness of a fresh watermelon slice, and somehow, makes it taste even sweeter.
What’s really interesting, though, is how salt changes the whole texture of the fruit. A light sprinkling of salt actually causes the liquid from a water-rich watermelon slice to rise to the surface, making it even more juicy and sugary! In fact, if you salt a piece of watermelon and leave it for a few minutes, you’ll notice this enhancement even more.
It has some health benefits, too. Salt, also called sodium, is a natural electrolyte. Electrolytes help you stay hydrated and maintain fluid balance in the body. Adding a dash of salt to watermelon, therefore, will actually increase the fruits’ hydrating powers.
How to Eat Watermelon With Salt
Now that you’re convinced, all you’ll need is a pinch of salt. Start off with the smallest amount possible, and add more as desired. I used coarse Himalayan pink salt for mine. All you have to do is sprinkle the salt on top of your watermelon slice, let it sit for a few minutes, and enjoy!
You can also get even more creative. To make a super indulgent treat, drizzle your salted watermelon with a little bit of honey. You could also squeeze some fresh lime juice onto your salted watermelon for a kick of citrus flavor.
