Putting Lemon in Your Water Can Expose You to Harmful Bacteria, Study Finds

Many folks out there are asking the question, “Is lemon water good for you?” And it’s no surprise why. After all, lemon water has been praised as an excellent way to aid weight loss as well as a flavor booster. Plus, it’s almost too easy to add a slice to your otherwise boring (but super necessary) beverage. But if you ask a restaurant to add a lemon slice to your water, it might be a too-easy way to getting some seriously nasty bacteria.

Is lemon water good for you?

In a recent study, researchers at Clemson University tested the survival of E. coli bacteria during the handling of lemons and ice. And, well, the findings were pretty sour. They found that dry lemons absorbed 30 percent of the bacteria, and that wet lemons absorbed a whopping 100 percent. Yikes! Those perfectly sliced lemons sitting by your favorite bar aren’t looking so appetizing anymore, are they?

If that’s not enough to shock you, the study also found that lemons stored at room temperature for 24 hours actually had an increase in E. coli after the time had passed. And even the lemons that were stored in the refrigerator showed some traces of the bacteria. No thank you to either of those in our glasses, please!

Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to kiss your beloved lemons goodbye forever. As long as you’re practicing proper hygiene at home and washing up before and after slicing, you should be fine getting fancy with your H2O. But perhaps the next time you’re out to eat, it might be a better to opt for the plain thing.
