5 Steps for Creating a Calming Meditation Space in Your Home
If you practice meditation, you know the only thing you should be focusing on is your breathing. But it’s hard to get Zen when you’re surrounded by clutter and distractions. If you prefer to meditate at home, it’s worth setting up a space that’s designed to promote calmness and relaxation, and assist in helping you to switch off.
Aesthetics are not the only thing to consider when creating a chill zone in the home. Light, ventilation, and even smell are all important things to think about as well. Here we share our top five tips to help you create a space in your home for meditation.
1. Eliminate distractions.
Choose a room that is free of distractions and as empty of clutter as possible. That means putting away any unfolded piles of laundry or things you associate with work. Turn off your mobile phone, computer, TV, and any other beeping gadgets or move them (or yourself) into a different room if possible. Try to find a time when other family members are out of the house to help you feel focused.
2. Prioritize comfort.
Choose a surface to sit on that you are comfortable on, like a yoga mat (you can roll up after use), a cushion, or even a chair if you need back support. If you’d prefer to lie down on your back then go ahead, but be warned that you might fall asleep!
3. Don’t forget to breathe.
You don’t want to be distracted by unpleasant odors. Ensure the room is well ventilated; open a window for fresh air and add an air-purifying plant or some of your favorite flowers. Choose a special oil burner and fill it with a blend of calming essential oils to help you achieve serenity.
4. Make it a routine.
Lighting a simple candle or two can help you get into the routine of meditation. Choose your favorite and use it solely for when you meditate. If you choose a fragranced variety, the scent will eventually trigger an association with peace and quiet. You can even try making your own scented candles.
5. Be choosy when it comes to music.
You may find that music distracts you, but if not, there are a multitude of options available. Set up your iPod or CD player in a corner or the room and bliss out on your chosen soothing tones, from nature sounds like rain and birdsong to classical jazz — whatever helps you to relax.
